In 18th century London, 16-year-old Ezra is working as apprentice to a highly respected surgeon, William McAdam. He knows that his impressive knowledge of anatomy and skill at the dissection table will ensure he has a trade for life. Yet whilst he is grateful to his master, who rescued him from a life of slavery, Ezra is eager for independence and to be his own man. I liked this book a lot, it’s a great romp for YA readers and wonderfully written, a great diverse read. I love the natural formation of the trio who I hope will get up to many more adventures!

Sawbones Book: The Hilarious, Horrifying Road to Modern

Sawbones is the story of Ezra, a young apprentice surgeon – or ‘sawbones’ – working in 18 th century London. When his master is killed, he meets Loveday Finch, who is looking for answers about her father’s murder. Together, they must discover what connects the two deaths, and why a mysterious organisation called the Ottoman Embassy may be behind them. That being said, I have a great deal of faith in Justin and Sydnee's ability to write a solid and enjoyable piece of text. I laughed out loud more than just a few times, and I adore that it's formatted to look like a small textbook. Teylor's illustrations were by far the highlight of the entire piece. Incredibly condescending and crass because the authors think being crass is amusing. I probably would have found some of the jokes funny 30 years ago, but they're just annoyingly puerile. A compelling, often hilarious and occasionally horrifying exploration of how modern medicine came to be!

Ever wondered how one might treat a baby with colic? An alcohol-chloroform-morphine concoction. Or about a lady who just loved the taste of that raw, cholera-infected water in 1854 South London? Or the poor and unfortunate fate of alligator parts? The Sawbones Book: The Hilarious, Horrifying Road to Modern Medicine is here to bounce from topic to topic, with some shorter interludes for weird medical questions from listeners/readers, all infused with jokes and asides that leaven some particularly gruesome and gory medical scenarios.

Science is bursting with the desire to grow, expand and pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable faster than it is accepted. Surgeons need to practice and need to learn, and they need corpses to both. Unfortunately not everyone willingly gives their body to science. It is in this environment that the resurrectionists are born, also known as grave robbers. Thieves paid well by thirsty scientific minds to bring to the anatomizing table a dead body that perhaps was laid to rest with the intention of staying that way. Going from creating in one medium to another is difficult. What comes across as relaxed and off-the-cuff in an audio medium can seem sloppy and unrefined in type. The expectations of a book are very different from those of a podcast, even a nonfiction podcast, and not every creator is going to be able to bridge that gap. Unfortunately, Justin and Sydnee McElroy are not able to thread that needle with The Sawbones Book: The Hilarious, Horrifying Road to Modern Medicine, an adaptation of their popular medical history podcast, Sawbones. The content is largely pulled from the podcast, but so is the style, so directly that there is no real modification for the new format. Pair that with the fact the book appears to have been edited with a chainsaw (even the Revised and Updated for 2020 edition), and this book just doesn’t feel ready for shelves. Justin McElroy is a 15-year journalism veteran with two awards from the Ohio Associated Press for business writing. He has served as the managing editor of AOL’s Joystiq and Vox Media’s Polygon (of which he’s also a founder).

Sydnee: Try to withhold judgment. As soon as you tell somebody they’re dumb, you’re done. It doesn’t matter what you say, they’re just going to be more entrenched in their beliefs. Most parents who are anti-vaccine are probably afraid of something. They’re misinformed, and they’re completely wrong, but their fear is real. Sawbones’s narration was as clean cut and objective as the scalpel and the mind of he that wields them. Ezra tells us his most peculiar adventure in a fashion that shows a mind brought up surrounded by reality and reason, where no laws are defied and common sense and logic are the rules that must be abided. The language and style were faithful to such a mind and showed great care and research on behalf of the very clever author. Every detail was delivered with some detachment; detachment that I would also expect in someone who has made the examination of death his business, and therefore no description appeared or transpired as gruesome or stomach churning. The critical eye delivered an accurate picture allowing both my mind and his to soak in the relevant information to attempt to solve the ever growing puzzle of bodies. This is a tough review to write. I love the podcast and I think that this book hits a lot of the same notes which made for an entertaining and informative read. The information covered was well researched and presented in an approachable and interesting way. I think it would be a good introductory taste to medical history rather than a comprehensive tome, and adds some interesting color to the world of medicine. If these were any other content creators besides the McElroys, there is no way this book would have such a high rating on Goodreads. I understand that folks are enthusiastic to support them - I am too - but such a high rating is extremely dishonest because the construction and editing of the book is so unforgivably flawed. I can't believe someone actually made the decision to ship out the books in this state. It feels like they're taking advantage of the fans' willingness to forgive the creators, and that is bad business.

This is my favorite podcast, so I was excited to get my hands on this book. Unfortunately it fell a little flat. First, if you listen to the podcast or enjoy medical history this book is not going to add to you knowledge. That isn’t a negative. Just be aware that it’s more of an introduction to the subject than an immersion into it. Second, the podcast is hilarious; the book not so much. The dynamic the two authors have verbally doesn’t translate well into the written word. I’ve experienced the same when reading other books by stand up comedians. Lastly, the book needed better editing. I found multiple typos and grammatical errors. This is what bothered me the most as it’s a pet peeve of mine. The editing in this book is egregious. There are maybe a dozen obvious typos and errors, and that’s in a revised edition that was released after the initial was widely criticized for being even messier. The 2020 edition also contains an opening chapter containing plague history, to relate to Covid-19, but the tone is so smug that even if you agree with every point they are making, you resent it. The latter half, which presumably had more time with an editor, fares better, but not by much. Very base “humour” that tries, and fails, to capitalize on our disgust reflex. In the Audible version, the weak content is made weaker through the amateurish delivery of the authors.
