However, as others have mentioned, the patterns themselves are overlayered in a chaotic way that rather kills the desire to use them. Whenever I check out a book from my library that includes the actual patterns the instructions are overwhelming. The book contains five basic clothing patterns that can be customized into twelve different items (three skirts, two tops, a coat, a jacket, three dresses, one pair of shorts and one of pants), as well as directions for a few sewn accessories as well (bags, scarves, jewelry).

The pictures are beautiful, the text engaging, the textiles (mostly) to my taste, the stories of textile travels make me want to follow. As much as I enjoyed the patterns/projects in this book, my favorite element were the interviews with other sewists.

The author also shares many personal anecdotes as she describes the process of creating the patterns and the book over the course of the year. I very much enjoyed her sense of style though, and the infectious cheerleading for the style of her friends and readers. The author's warm and welcoming writing tone invites readers to follow her on a creative journey that includes some of her friends and family members. Photographed by Jenny Hallengren over the course of a year in her life in New York, Tennessee, India, and Sweden and organized by season, Jansdotter shares her sources of inspiration and how she and her friends mix and match her key pieces while working, playing, resting, and traveling. The photos are beautiful and work taking a deep look at, especially those showing her sketches, mood board, and design wall.

The styles are mostly shapeless, which is not to my taste but does work for many people so that's not a reason to give a bad review. Knowing nothing about Jansdotter and thus not being interested in her mother-in-law, I found the book rather underwhelming. My one complaint is the patterns are all on four sheets of paper and overlap so much it's hard to tell where each pattern is without looking at the guide at the back of the book. Primarily this is a book about Lotta Jansdotter herself with lots and lots of pictures of her studio and her friends and miscellaneous bits of craft, with some very basic patterns included.Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Patterns is all about flexible and customizable sewing to create signature pieces for your wardrobe. I'm fond of Japanese Pattern books (like those by Yoshiko Tsukiori) so perhaps I just expected too much from this book. For each garment, Jansdotter offers ideas for trims, pockets, sleeves, and hemlines to encourage readers to personalize and add details. Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Patterns is all about flexible, customizable garments to wear in your nest and in your neighborhood, and easy, fun ways to alter each one as the season-or your mood-changes.

Overall, I was actually impressed with this book and would recommend it to those starting to sew their own garments. If you need a pattern for a rectangular cloth bag with handles on it then you probably need a bit more hand-holding in the making of it than this book provides.

The book includes sewing instruction and patterns for basic garments (skirt, shirt, shirt dress, tunic, pants, jacket, and robe) and unique accessories (tote bag, bandana, and more). It's not bad but it's certainly nothing to get all excited about, unless you want to get a few extremely basic patterns, including patterns for a tote bag and a couple of basic purses.
