In 2018, WTB added the 2.8” option to the Vigilante family, offering a wider format to the same revised tread pattern and rubber compounds used in the entire lineup. Both the 29” and 27.5 x 2.8” Vigilante use WTB’s TriTec Compound, which simply refers to three distinct rubber densities used throughout the tread. Softer compounds are used on the surface of the tread for grip, hard compounds throughout the base of the tread provide support, and a medium compound down the centerline of the tire provides a mix of rolling speed and grip. Using E-GUM-X, a new rubber compromising lateral and central rubbers designed to optimise grip, with a tread pattern from the Enduro ranges for a better hold. New generations of top-of-the-range rubbers that give better rolling strength and lower energy consumptions. As long as you mount them on a reasonable rim width (Bontrager recommend a 35mm as a good starting point) they don’t ricochet off big landings or square edge wallops like a lot of high-volume sub-kilo tyres do. Before we get to how they ride, let’s just take a moment to appreciate those beautiful sidewalls. I hadn’t gotten a single compliment on my bike before mounting these tires, but when I debuted my new setup on opening weekend in Downieville, I was getting stopped by all sorts of weekend warriors commenting on my sweet tan sidewalls.
