Description

For training and competition of 2 – 2.5 hours or more, SiS Beta Fuel is the next generation of endurance fuelling. The chart below is designed to help you decide how many grams of carbohydrate per hour you should aim for depending on the exercise duration and intensity. Each Science in Sport energy powder comes in a variety of flavours to suit individual preferences, in general we would recommend having a look at GO Energy or GO Electrolyte for exercise less than 2 hours, then would advise starting to look at Beta Fuel for exercise longer than this. As always though, nothing new on race day, make sure you train with any powder you are planning to use on an event! If you eat a balanced diet, your body can only store enough carbohydrate for around 90-120 minutes of exercise. Standard (Olympic), middle (70.3) and full (140.6) distance triathlons will all take over this amount of time.

We have published groundbreaking science that challenges previous thinking about high carbohydrate & endurance nutrition – and how to fuel winning performances. The combination of maltodextrin and fructose, is the key to SiS Beta Fuel, as the transportation of nutrients across the intestinal wall is a rate limiting factor in carbohydrate oxidation during exercise. How does SiS Beta Fuel work? I'll start with the nutrition issues that I was having. Put simply, I was struggling to get nutrition onboard in enough volume to sustain the rate that I burn it during a race. Take, for example, one early-season E12 race. The 125km race lasted 3 hours and in that time I burned 2,243 calories. My usual nutrition strategy of two 500ml bottles (189kCal each) of SIS Go Energy and around five High5 Energy Gels (91kCal each) left a deficit not just in calories but also in carbohydrate. This intake gave me 209g of carbs.

Long been favoured by elite athletes, our famous Science in Sport Beta Fuel Energy Drink has now been optimised, making it a scientifically superior fuel. A brand new 1:0.8 ratio of 80g carbohydrate enhances your power output, increases your body's carbohydrate usage efficiency, and limits gastrointestinal discomfort.

Now with the gel range, there are two different types of gels, the Beta Fuel gels and then the Beta Fuel gels with nootropics. The key difference between the two types of gels is the nootropics which are added for cognitive stimulation. Specifically designed sport nutrition products are a great way to build up your nutrition plan as they are designed to be eaten on the go and be as practical as possible. At SiS, there are a variety of formats and flavours to choose from which can help keep it varied throughout your ride! The new SiS Beta Fuel Powder solution contains 80 grams of carbohydrate at this 1:0.8 ratio, in a neutral pH formula still maintaining the signature isotonic format to minimise gastrointestinal issues. The Powder is available in Orange, Strawberry and Lime and Red Berry flavours. Jeukendrup, A. E. (2013). Nutrition for endurance sports: marathon, triathlon, and road cycling. Food, Nutrition and Sports Performance III, 99-108. Our science-based solution, the combination of maltodextrin and fructose in an isotonic formula, is still the key to SiS Beta Fuel, as the transportation of nutrients across the intestinal wall is a rate limiting factor in carbohydrate oxidation during exercise. The unique 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose increases the percentage of ingested carbohydrate that is oxidised from 62% to 74% when compared to a more standard ratio of 2:1. This, specially formulated, ratio also reduces the self-reported symptoms of stomach fullness, especially when compared to a 2:1 ratio. Have used this product for a number of years now. Provides carbs and electrolytes needed for my long endurance rides. Excellent product” – Christian Harland 04/07/2022

As well as the Powder, the new SiS Beta Fuel range contains two different types of energy gels. The SiS Beta Fuel Gel contains 40 grams of carbohydrate also at the 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose in Orange and Strawberry and Lime flavours, with a second gel containing Nootropics, with the aim of giving you that mental boost during prolonged exercise. x SiS Beta Fuel Chew Bars, one of each of the Lemon and Orange flavours – 80 grams (40 g per bar – 7 g per chew) Through our Performance Solutions team, we have worked closely with elite athletes in the research and development of the new Beta Fuel range to bring you a scientifically superior fuel in a range of formats that allow you to use +17% more carbohydrate (O’Brien et al, 2013). As part of the 2022 Runner’s World Sports Nutrition Awards, we enlisted a 200-strong panel of testers – made up of ordinary runners and experts – to slurp and munch their way through a variety of market-leading energy gels, drinks and chews to find the best on the market. It is suggested that during endurance exercise (more than 2.5 hours) 80–120 g of carbohydrate per hour should be consumed to maintain blood glucose levels and prevent fatigue. That means for all of these distances you need to consider your fuelling strategy. Before the event it might be worth considering carbohydrate loading strategies (purposely consuming more carbohydrate in the days running up to an event), but importantly you need to consider your carbohydrate consumption during exercise, both what you will be consuming and when. It takes around 500g of carbohydrate to fill your glycogen stores and, at most, this will last you for 60-90 minutes of running at 55-75 percent of your maximal heart rate,' explains leading sports dietician Renee McGregor. 'The faster you go, the sooner your stores will deplete.'

We recommend you practice your nutrition during training to find the optimal amount that works for you. So, in 2018, SiS Beta Fuel was developed to enable us to increase carbohydrate oxidation to more than 60 grams per hour and to achieve that, we combined another form of carbohydrate, which has a different transporter, fructose. Because fructose has a different transporter than glucose, a dual source formulation allows for greater carbohydrate delivery to our muscles during exercise, therefore increasing how much carbohydrate we can use.

A ratio of 1:0.8 increases % of ingested CHO that was oxidised (efficiency) from 62% (2:1) to 74% (1:0.8) (O’Brien et al) By using a precise balance of maltodextrin and fructose, rather than a single form of carbohydrate, performance improved with Science in Sport Beta Fuel, whilst avoiding any digestion issues. This new range uses a ratio of maltodextrin to fructose at 1:0.8 (previous 2:1) has been proven to:
