Del Toro also pokes and prods the director, working to understand the philosophical aspects of the film and Phil Tippett’s mindset. surprisingly a bit taxing on the senses after awhile, what with no real (or at least extensive) dialogue to use as any kind of sonic anchor point.

There’s a brief feature focusing on the students with the Academy of Art University and how some of the pupils came aboard Mad God .Phil Tippett is a visual effects artist I’ve been keenly aware of ever since he became a meme for improperly supervising the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, and frankly I’m ashamed I hadn’t been following him and his work for longer.

The mix is by turns subtle and chaotic, a sonic blizzard of weird little organic sounds, movements, and directionally. Whether he ultimately reaches his objective is another matter, as he's captured and subjected to torture.

It’s definitely not for everyone – there’s good reason why I waited to watch this on a weekend my partner was not around, for she would have despised every inch of this – but if you appreciate the likes of Cronenberg, Lynch or Carpenter’s darker side, and especially if the stop-motion film-making technique appeals to you, then this is a must watch.

He emerges in what looks like the ruins of a small town and begins his journey almost immediately and obliviously crushing what appear to be living garden gnomes. A corroded diving bell descends amidst a ruined city and the Assassin emerges from it to explore a labyrinth of bizarre landscapes inhabited by freakish denizens. There’s a human-like figure credited as “The Assassin” in a jacket and gas-mask who descends into this hellish world ( Dante’s Inferno is another big influence) where he encounters monsters, witches and other strange things in a decaying world full of dread. Combined, Tippett discusses the long and winding road to Mad God, his inspirations for the film, and his influences in the art of stop-motion animation. To finish, it is interesting to note how physical releases of films initially only on streaming services like Shudder have become a more pressing concern following the controversy around HBO Max and Warner Bros. Before signing up for reviewing this I was warned that the film is “relentlessly bleak” (to which I responded that I could easily handle that, as I’ve been working in an office for 12 years), and I would say that the description is very accurate. Read more about the condition New: An item that is still in its original shrink wrap from the manufacturer and the original manufacturer’s seal (if applicable) has not been removed. The film repeats this voyeuristic imagery throughout: we watch murders through a window and are positioned within a cackling audience watching a dismemberment through a theatrical gauze.
