They empty the full bag of beans into their hopper or fill it as full as they can, and from this point on, they may as well just have a pile of coffee beans sitting on the kitchen work surface. The beans will be affected by constant temperature, humidity, light, and heat fluctuations in that room, as they don't have any protection from these elements.

Special coffee is speciality coffee. If you've not been bitten by the speciality coffee bug yet, then you might not be quite sure what I'm harping on about, and if so, then you may have heard this term “speciality coffee” floating around, and you may think it's just a fancy pants name for pricier coffee beans, but it's really not, it's the name used for a buzz that began in the 1970s (no, not that kind of buzz!) for very special coffee beans, which slowly took hold of the world, and is just now starting to break out into the mainstream. Yes - To open simply push the press button on the cap, and pull the cap off. To close, push the press button, no need to pump, push cap down onto the body and with this motion the cap volume of air is eliminated, creating a vacuum seal, it’s that simple! It is also possible to push the cap slowly down without pressing the button. This is the way our one way degassing valve eliminates carbon dioxide buildup. However we always recommend using the button when opening and closing the Coffeevac V. The Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canisteris sleek, easy to use, and available in several sizes and colors, not to mention it has a dependable airtight seal. As an alternative, the Oxo Steel Pop Containehas excellent value for money and passed our tests with flying colors. How We Tested Coffee Canisters What really sets this canister apart is its inner lid, which you press down via a handle to remove the air from inside. Out of the 15 canisters we tested, this one tied for first place in freshness and flavor, largely due to the effectiveness of the inner lid. The Airscape is also one of the easiest canisters to clean (even though it's not dishwasher-safe) because its large size allows customers to reach all parts inside with a sponge. We were immediately impressed by the item's weight and durability, especially given its affordable price. The sliding drawer worked smoothly after long-term use and never squeaked or creaked. The drawer has to be cleaned by hand, but this shouldn't be much of an issue since it stores K-Cups instead of actual coffee beans. Some people believe it's the changes that the room conditions are making to the burrs, but that doesn't make sense to me, it seems much more likely that it's the beans that are being affected by the fluctuations in room temperature and humidity due to having no protection. In addition to a vacuum seal, Coffeevacs also feature a unique (patented) degassing valve. A degassing valve helps to maintain the freshness of coffee beans while they are on the shelf at a store or in your pantry or kitchen. This valve permits the escape of gas, while simultaneously preventing oxygen from entering. As a result, the coffee beans are protected from the staleness that can result from exposure to oxygen, which can also negatively affect their flavor. Ground coffee freshness: For each canister, we ground a bag of coffee and made notes on its color, aroma, and texture. Then we placed half the coffee in the canister and followed the included directions to close and seal it, leaving the rest of the coffee in the original bag. After eight days, we examined both batches, comparing their characteristics to each other and to the original notes. We also brewed a cup of coffee using each and compared their flavor and aroma.

We offer 10 different sizes and 3 styles of Vacs – Solid – Clear and Tint. Often a Solid & Tint Vac will have a slightly looser fitting cap then a clear model. It is a misconception that a tighter fitting cap is working better or holding more of a seal. Loose caps function just as well and will tighten with time and use. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. If you’re out and about and looking for the single dose carrier, try the Coffeevac in the TV1 - 1.4oz/40g size. It makes a great sniffer for connoisseurs as well! Out for the weekend? No problem, use the TV2 - 3oz/75g Coffeevac! Or, the TV3 - 6oz/150g for your office or kitchen countertop. And, if you’re looking to store a pound of coffee, we’ve got you! Use the CFV2 - 1lb/16oz/500g Coffeevac. I need to do more research into this, but from the relatively crude testing that I've done when it comes to trying to figure out why I need to dial in again when I walk up to a grinder an hour or two later, I can't find anything else but the beans being exposed to the changing environment being the main culprit. You can find the Le Creuset Storage Canister in three sizes, starting at 23 ounces and working up to this 2.5-quart model. This offers the chance to buy a matching set in various sizes should you want to store other kitchen goods, like sugar and flour. The canister is dishwasher-safe, although the lid is hand-wash only. Hand wash only - Use mild or natural cleaners. Do not microwave or put in a dishwasher. Dishwasher temperatures are often to hot and this can cloud plastic and melt parts. Always keep the interior of the cap and the top of the container clean. This will ensure easy open and closure.

In fact, I won't keep you in suspenders any longer on this point, let's start out with the aforementioned no1 most popular storage solution for coffee beans which is also one of the worst: Don’t Store Your Beans in Your Hopper The United States patent office granted us a patent on a vacuum container and degassing valve. Our Vacs create a partial vacuum – The same volume of air as the cap is removed and for human purposes this is enough to keep most goods fresh and edible for long periods of time. For the engineers out there technically speaking there is no vacuum until the cap is pulled upward without pressing the button. Either way the Vacs will keep goods fresher for longer and prevent weevil & bug infestations. This reality is why globally we have sold over 12 million Vacs without advertising. No batteries or electricity required! If you're going to put them straight into an Airscape or Fellow Atmos for example, meaning you'll be pushing the air out, then that's fair enough, but if you're putting them in a container that doesn't allow you to force the air out, or if you're keeping them in the bag, I'd recommend not opening them until you're about to use them. Whole bean coffee freshness: We performed a similar test with whole beans that we did with ground coffee, storing half a bag in each canister and the other half in the bag over the course of eight days. We made notes on color and aroma of the beans before and after storage, and prepared a cup of coffee with the canister- and bag-stored beans to compare their flavor. As a further test of post-storage freshness, we sealed a few beans in zip-top bags and watched to see if the bags puffed up. (Fresh coffee beans produce carbon dioxide, which gradually inflates a sealed bag.) We tested the largest model, which holds 2.5 quarts. Since it isn't specifically designed for coffee, we found it more simplistic than other canisters, some of which include one-way CO2 valves, clasps, coffee scoops, and more. It's also on the expensive end, partially because of the durable stoneware it's made from, so it isn't the best value for money out there. Regardless, we gave it high marks for freshness, durability, and ease of cleaning. For the full scoop on speciality coffee including the amazing (sounds made up, it isn't!) story about the woman who pushed against all the odds to pretty much single-handedly start the speciality coffee movement, see: Glass jars, mason jars, etc are fine for keeping coffee beans in, as long as they create an airtight seal, which many of the storage jars will, but as long as you do one thing, which is to keep the jar with your coffee in, in a dark, relatively cool and temperature stable place, such as a low cupboard (away from any heat sources).
