It works almost as well as a standalone as it does in the series and I would rate it as high as Fulgrim or Legion as the best of the series. It is still a great read to follow and see what happened aboard the Eisenstein after the events of Isstvan III. The Eisenstein becomes stranded in the Warp until it is rescued by Rogal Dorn and the Imperial Fists.

You're not going to cover much of the same ground at all, so don't worry about a retelling, you will occasionally see a familiar face but this is an entirely new story. This book was no different, with a lot of overlap with Counter's book but standing alone in a way that didn't having me reach for it to refresh my memory. The rich language and detailed descriptions Swallow used in this book impressed me and Keebles performance kept me engaged. For newcomers to the 40k universe, the Heresy novels are set - much like the Clone Wars - in the build-up to the most pivotal moment of the saga.In a vast galaxy where instantaneous communication is impossible, you place your trust in your brothers who have campaigned with you, meaning claims of betrayal are difficult to process.

The author's focus and development on the changing hero is subtle, sensitive to basic human traits and all connected with substantial action. I had hope though since the Death Guard was one of the first legions that piqued my interest, and Mortarion looks so cool. Ordinarily the hero would be a cypher, ultimately doomed to die and serving little purpose except to drive the arc forward. Once we're all back on the titular Eisenstein and ready to go this book never looks back and never lets up.
