I've appeared on CBS News, in USA Today, and at many other outlets to offer analysis on breaking technology news. WD My Passport Wireless Pro and SSD Online User guide for Information, Configuration and Solutions.*END

With FiLMic, you can write footage wirelessly direct to the My Passport as you film so you save space on your phone. With LumaTouch, you can import content wirelessly from My Passport to edit wherever you go. The My Passport Wireless Pro reminded us of an external DVD player or the Voyo V3 mini PC. Think about it – it's about the same size as a DVD disk with dimensions of 125 x 125 x 22mm, and it weighs 450g. There are three main ways to connect to the WD My Passport Wireless SSD: first, by wirelessly connecting your device direct to the drive’s own Wifi network, secondly, by connecting to the drive wirelessly via a shared access point (like a home or office access point), and third, by connecting a computer directly to the drive using a USB 3 cable. The addition of Plex is an interesting feature and we'd like to see more of this sort of thing in the future.Use My Passport Wireless Pro as a Wi-Fi hub and share an Internet connection with up to eight (8) separate devices. The My Passport Wireless SDD can be used to charge any USB powered accessory – seen here with the Sony a7R III. What this meant was I could keep the My Passport Wireless SSD in the overhead luggage compartment on a plane, whilst our two kids could be sitting on nearby seats watching their favorite shows, and my wife and I could be streaming movies to our respective iPads… all at the same time!

So for the target audience (photographers and videographers), the My Passport Wireless Pro is a great, if not perfect, match. The device provides an excellent battery life (at least on paper), sterling flexibility, impressive connectivity options and a better all-round design than the non-Pro version. A convenient USB 2.0 port and the one-touch copy button let you easily transfer files from compatible card readers and external USB storage devices. Visit support.wd.com for a full list of compatible card readers. Since the My Passport contains a high performance SDD, you can connect it directly via USB to your computer to function as a fast external hard drive. There’s also the option to transfer photos wirelessly from your camera — although only a small number of cameras actually support this at present. That’s because most cameras with built-in Wi-Fi are generally designed to work with phones and tablets, and only rarely with dedicated storage drives. To get support for the latter, you’ll need to own one of the handful of high-end pro DSLRs from Canon or Nikon which have built-in FTP support, or a camera which is compatible with a wireless file transmitter attachment.

My Passport Wireless SSD Review | Is it for you?

It’s also of course possible to store a bunch of your own photos, music and videos on the device to enjoy while you’re on your travels. Again it can be configured to present itself as a DLNA media server, allowing any compatible player to access the content. The WD My Passport Wireless SSD may work quite happily as a wireless or wired storage device for computers, but it’s also designed for those who want to leave their laptop at home and access their content via a smartphone or tablet. WD provides the free My Cloud app for iOS and Android devices to access the contents of the drive wirelessly, as well as to configure it and set it up in the first place. I tried it on an Apple iPad and a Samsung Galaxy S7 Android phone.

If the name of the My Passport Wireless device has been changed, please search and select the device's name instead of MyPassport. Before I joined the tech-journalism ranks, I wrote on topics as diverse as Borneo's rain forests, Middle Eastern airlines, and Big Data's role in presidential elections. A graduate of Middlebury College, I also have a master's degree in journalism and French Studies from New York University. Above: Browsing through large numbers of photos is much easier with the larger screen of a tablet, such as an iPad here. After the My Passport Wireless Pro boot up, the disk LED will start flashing while the update is happening. Even if we had mixed feelings about past versions of the My Passport Wireless, the 2016 “pro” variant of the external HDD restores faith in the Western Digital name. The design, for one, has been overhauled and no longer resembles the My Passport Ultra or My Passport for Mac. Instead, there’s now a more premium feel to the My Passport Wireless Pro.

A must-have backup tool for travelling photographers

Long press the SD card button and the contents of your SD card will be automatically copied or moved – depending on how the button is configured – to the hard disk drive. In that mode, the lights on top will indicate how far the copy/move process has got to go. This answer explains how to initially set a My Passport Wireless Pro up using a Windows computer.*END
