Description

The size is great, and can fit easily into a folder or a large pocket (back in the days of the doctor's white coat it would have fit perfect).

The book is well presented for learning examinations; using a table format, explanations are given without detracting from the process of the examination. On the following pages there are facts relating to that particular examination and, in many sections, there are also tips on how to present your findings succinctly – a skill which is crucial to master for exam success. Two new assessments have also been introduced (stations 2+5) where candidates have 15 minutes to undertake a clinical consultation (obtain a detailed history, conduct a physical examination and identify clinical signs, plus advise on management) before they are questioned by the examiner. The best thing about this book is that it also has these summaries of key examination findings, and blank spaces for your own notes which make it even better than some of the other revision books out there. You are required to conduct a respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and abdominal examination in addition to demonstrating your communication skills. Some detail has been omitted intentionally – for example, nowhere is the exact method of examining for flapping tremor explained. B. Ruthven, MBChB (Hons), BSc (Hons), wrote this best-selling clinical exam and OSCE book while he was a medical student. Although the content has been extensively reviewed, refined and updated, much of it is still presented in ways that helped me to remember it at medical school. Essential Examination, third edition: Step-by-step guides to clinical examination scenarios with practical tips and key facts for OSCEs [Spiral-bound] Ruthven, Alasdair K.

Often in an OSCE you will not be asked to complete the full examination of a particular body system. Brilliant book for any medical students getting ready for OSCEs "Brilliant book for any medical students getting ready for OSCEs.The size of the book also means that it is easy for students to transport and keep with them out in clinical practice, meaning they can refer to it during their practice time and use it as a handy reference guide. Some examinations, of course, follow their own unique sequence; these are the most difficult to learn and so you must become very familiar with them. Although it is not as in-depth as some of the other key texts out there such as McLeod or the Bates guide, it is nevertheless, a vital text to support students’ knowledge and understanding of the assessment process. In a separate column is a collection of key information: potential findings, differential diagnoses of clinical signs and practical tips. There used to be a 20 minute station dedicated to a single communications and ethics encounter — this was considered too long.
