Description

The inclusion of oat in the botanical blend has allowed this gin to offer a one-of-a-kind mouthfeel and truly bonds all 10 of the botanicals to create an exquisite spirit.

While The Highclere Castle folks tout this as a “Super Premium” gin, those words are really just puffery - advertising lingo to make a product look good, (like the word “handmade” which sadly also has no legal meaning behind it) but this is a gin which backs it up in flavor and complexity.

Once you get past the juniper and citrus, the flavors of lavender, and the mouthfeel added by the oats, which are added in the botanical mix, offer a depth, and long lasting aftertaste, which is remarkably pleasant. Distilled above an ancient underground water source, Highclere Castle Gin is produced at Langley Distillery; England’s oldest gin distillery in one of the oldest working copper gin stills dating back to the 1800’s. Still today, Highclere plays host to many of the world’s foremost statesmen, scientists, celebrities and artists where the evening always begins with gin cocktails dating back to the 1920’s. This very special partnership makes Highclere Castle Gin a uniquely Anglo-American product merging British pedigree and style with American innovation and drive for perfection. With only 2,000 cases produced, this special blend of Highclere Castle Gin is a once in a lifetime product, and, like the discovery of King Tut’s Tomb, will go down in history, never to be released again.

Highclere Castle Gin is the winner of 71 international spirit awards with multiple scores of 96 points! The botanical mixture isn’t far from a classic London dry, and while the makers proudly state the botanicals are inspired by the gardens of Highclere Castle, they are just that , inspired. The balance of floral and citrus notes mingle quite nicely with a touch of spice and a well integrated essence of juniper. If you do require precise ingredient information you should consult the manufacturer, whose contact details will appear on the packaging or label. As an unusual but delicious twist, Highclere’s acclaimed estate-grown oats have been woven into the botanical blend to give an exceptionally creamy palate and a long and memorable finish. While being perfect for many famous cocktails it has been noted that people have been enjoying it on the rocks with a slice of orange zest or rosemary a drink now known as “The Noble”, so smooth you can enjoy it in its simplest form. Highclere Castle Gin is distilled from a blend of botanicals grown on Highclere Castle’s ancient estate including vibrant oranges from the Victorian Orangery. When you subscribe to our VIP Club you’ll receive your exclusive surprise bottle in the middle of the month. From the beautiful bottle to the delicious liquid inside, this was the first time I actually enjoyed gin.

Now I don’t know a thing about Downton Abbey - which happens to be the actual structure known as Highclere castle (Featured quite prominently on the bottle), but I do know a thing or two about gin, and this is a good one which should be in any gin drinker’s arsenal.
