And my usual high pass filter to get rid of extreme lows that just add distortion and not much more. You find a sense of scale and power in the drivers that seems much more than you’d expect from a speaker at this end of the market. For extra bassy quality with this setup simply add an external subwoofer to get some serious bite. The bass port fires downwards into a small air gap between base of the cabinet and the plinth below

Wharfedale 220 has a Bass Reflex type cabinet and a MDF/Wood veneer finish. Bass Reflex type loudspeakers (aka Ported, Vented or Reflex Port) have enclosures that uses a port, hole or vent cut into the cabinet. Ported designs are generally more efficient than the Sealed designs. The 5 inch woven Kevlar mids and bass driver from the 121 has come over to this model but is souped out with a bigger magnet which makes the bass more responsive and makes the harder easier to ‘drive’. This vinyl finish is classy and unassuming, helping it blend perfectly into most environments. They also come in different styles such as walnut and rosewood finishes.

Quite simply, you hear more of the drive units and less of the cabinet. But there’s more than just better finish involved in the move to the new model. One odd thing, I've never been one to swear by "break-in" but the longer these play, they better they seem to sound, and I've read people noting the sound continues to improve, potentially over weeks and even months. I've noted a subjective improvement, with the bass deepening and the clarity from the tweeters improving over several hours listening. I wonder if it has something to do with the materials. The woofer is woven kevlar, very stiff material so I wonder if it flexes and loosens up over time. Yes, no need to fear, the price for these speakers include two of these speakers for both left and right separation. Which makes them even better value. Our Final Say Speaker Stands: Stands bring your bookshelf speakers to ideal height (rule of thumb is to have the tweeter level with your ear in your listening position), helps stability and acoustical isolation.

Also room and setup play a significant role when evaluating speakers. When I owned the Kef LS50 I set them up in two different rooms with the same system. They sounded amazing in one room, with warm sound and nice bass, a truly class A speaker, but they sounded attrocious in the other room, they were bright and harsh. There’s scale here with a degree of authority and substance that no rival we’ve heard can better. Stereo imaging is good too, nicely projected and layered. The good news continues where integration is concerned, with everything tying together into a seamless whole. Have had the dali zensor 1 for about 1½ years (denon amp) but at high levels the top gets to agressive, intrusive and i generally find the top to loud (not a good balance, the bostons are much better), used them with a small subwoofer and that helped a bit with the bright sound and the bass that is not as good as the bostons. This is thanks to layered approach to the speaker cabinet material which involves a layer of DMF, then a layer of chipboard, sandwiched with another MDF layer and finished with one final thin vinyl layer for style.

I used 800+ measurement points which resulted in error rate of slightly above 1% in upper treble frequencies. Note: Measurements taken in the anechoic chamber at Canada's National Research Council can be found through thislink.A ‘speaker cabinet’ is simply the unit that encases the hardware. This can change the sound quality of the speaker greatly if the wrong materials are used. In the 220s they changed the material to a mix of MDF and chipboard wood. Most of the time it is a game of wattage, we find that these Wharfedale Diamond 220’s are perfect for any small studio setup, or even in a university dorm setup. They feature woven "ribbed" Kevlar drivers - incredibly light and incredibly stiff, alongside a revised, much bigger magnet system for better responsiveness. The result is something huge pay perch and accessible, but still capable of inspiring performance. The reduced (from virtually nothing at first) resonance and greater magnet in the driver has led the sound is described as clean, clear and transparent, controlled bass.
