There are, in theory, cheaper beers available, such as Taddy Lager, but they often seem to be unavailable in practice.

The Old Brewery is both the oldest brewery in Yorkshire and the only surviving independent brewery in Tadcaster. [1] The smallest of the three modern-day Tadcaster breweries, Samuel Smith's is one of the few remaining British breweries to employ the traditional Yorkshire Square system, a method of fermentation developed in the 19th century to cleanse beer of yeast. Most modern squares are made of stainless steel but Smith’s prefers Welsh slate, which they feel helps keep natural carbonation entrained in the beer, imparting a creamier texture. [1] We enjoyed one of our several recent visits to Samuel Smith pubs despite all of the above, because the building and location were somewhat magical.

Double Four Lager

The Grade II*-listed building and scheduled monument, in Darley Abbey, is one of the last remaining parts of a 12th-century abbey. It has been closed since November 2019, after the last tenants left at short notice. There was also a fire in December 2017 which saw the pub shut for many months. Responding to the show's claims on the surplus policy, the brewery said this had been agreed with Trading Standards and was in line with British Beer and Pub Association Guidelines. In July 2017, Samuel Smith's Brewery banned motorcyclists from one of their pubs. Initially, no explanation was offered for the ban. It was later reported that the ban was instituted to keep "undesirables" from patronising the establishment. Local, long-term customers who were refused entry because they owned motorcycles, were offended by the notion of being compared to criminal motorcycle gangs. The affected customers reportedly have no legal recourse as "bikers were not a 'protected group' under the Equality Act." Here at Derbyshire Live, we have approached the brewery many times for comments on stories concerning The Abbey. We have never received a response. Unusually for many country pubs, dogs also don't make the cut as to what is allowed in the brewery's establishments. No one seems to be quite sure why, but it seems our four-legged friends will have to find somewhere else to frequent. No comment Pours a clear copper-amber colour, capped off with nearly one finger of soapy, foamy, off white-tinged head that falls apart within a few minutes' time. A wide, creamy collar and bubbly film of suds remain on the surface, with decent lace generation as the level drops. The aroma is understated, but highly pleasant - I'm getting tea leafy hops, toffee and pudding, along with fruitier notes that remind me of sultana raisin, grape, fig and orange peel.
