With everything featured on this list, you should be able to stay happily invested in the Stranger Things Universe for many months to come, maybe even until season 5 arrives! I’m really glad I found this book. If you’re a fan of Stranger Things you might want to try this one. Taking Houser's suggestion, colorist Lauren Affe designed the book in the style of '80s comics while adding brighter tones to give a retro feel. [3] One miniseries, Stranger Things: Tales from Hawkins, takes an anthology format and follows different characters in each issue. Exhausted and at the end of his rope, Will Byers seeks shelter in a dark mirror of the fort he created in happier times, Castle Byers. Will must fight to keep his sanity just as surely as he mush fight to keep out of the Demogorgon's clutches in this suspenseful conclusion.

Sometimes there are questions that should just remain unanswered for the greater good. Will Byers’ point of view was a mystery that could have stayed unsolved, leaving the viewers the opportunity to speculate on what he has been through and what was going through his head throughout the whole season. To try to cover all that ground within four issues was already, beforehand, an impossible task, or at least one that would come with severe flaws. In this case, the pacing was the biggest issue as the accelerated rhythm does not allow the reader to truly absorb and comprehend the amount of time Will Byers spends in this dark and sinister realm. The pacing does not also allow the reader to understand how much resilience was needed to fight through all the obstacles he faced. To deliver such a story simply takes away the stakes and gravity of what he goes through, even if it is for the sake of finding out what exactly it is he went through. I was super excited to read this book which contains Stranger Things: The Other Side comics #1-4. Stranger Things is one of my favorite Netflix series (all three seasons), so I grabbed this as soon as I saw it.

Customer reviews

The first miniseries, The Other Side, depicts Will Byers' fight for survival after being taken into the Upside Down by the Demogorgon. Jody Houser, the writer of the series stated it was her love for the show that encouraged her to take on the project. "The hardest part was not breathing a word about it for six months!" she told. Penciller Stefano Martino revealed that he was excited working with Houser and also to take on this project giving the right respect to the fan base. [2] Story [ ] As a Soviet double agent breaks his cover to help a leading scientist's two children escape from the KGB, he takes a journey into his past to make amends for his biggest regret. Meanwhile, the Demogorgon's keeper uses her "pet" to test the scientists' loyalty . . .

Honestly, the whole read is slightly depressing, because as anyone who’s watched “Stranger Things” knows, this is a world that’s RIFE with story-potential, that has all kinds of cool and exciting avenues to explore. Yet time and time again, writer Jody Houser seems determined to play things safe, choosing instead to either a.) recap stuff that we’ve already seen play out way more interestingly on the show, or b.) give us extended sequences where characters monologue about this thing or that thing, but overall, nothing of consequence really happens. Maybe it’s not her fault – perhaps Netflix and whoever is in charge of managing the property didn’t give her a lot of narrative leash to play with. But regardless of WHO’S fault it is, it doesn’t change the fact that, at the end of the day, “Volume I” is kind of a bummer to read. It is December 26, 1984 – just a few weeks after Stranger Things season 2 – and as Jim Hopper and Eleven wait out a bad snowstorm, El decides to pull out a box from Hop’s days as a New York City homicide detective and make her newly-legally-minted father tell her the story about the time that he chased down a bizarre serial killer. Stranger Things: Darkness on the Edge of Town is set in July 1977, at a place and with characters that have very little bearing upon the Stranger Things full timeline – if any bearing at all, that is. Therefore, it's truly a standalone story. The team had to work closely with Netflix to figure out on what areas of the world they could expand on. Due to Stranger Things being an ongoing show, they had to tread carefully. [2] Eventually they decided to explore Will’s story. Regarding the decision, Houser explained that "Will was less a character" in the first season and "more of a treasure that the adventuring party was trying to find," and the team wanted to explore the Upside Down from his perspective.Officers Powell and Callahan (both of whom are featured in season 4) patrol the mean streets of Hawkins, Indiana during the events of the third season, including the Starcourt Mall (before the fire). This is a new comic that won’t be released until July 6, 2022, but it would fit in right here.

More Stranger Things content

Stranger Things: FCBD 2020 (after season 3, shortly after the Byers and Eleven move out of Hawkins) I wanted to – badly. But “Stranger Things: Volume I” is pretty much the definition of a “cash-in” – a tie-in comic that exists solely to siphon a little extra dough off of the propertys current red-hot status in the marketplace. Reading these four issues is a little like reading a teaser for a big comic book event – there’s little to no real plot, the art is functional at best, and everything feels slightly obligatory, almost like this comic exists because, well, of course it HAS to, it’s freaking “Stranger Things”!

Outside of the comics, books and the show, there is some other media to enjoy within the Stranger Things franchise, including a short story collection, games and reference books that go behind-the-scenes of the series. Free Comic Book Day titlesSince the miniseries focused on Will's time in the Upside Down, Martino got the opportunity to explore some of the nuances of the show's visual landscape. He focused his art on "the more natural and emotional storytelling" so that readers could feel "the fear of Will in his face and his entire body".
