He celebrates the importance of fitness and his efforts to get in shape, but rejects sports science, heart-rate monitors and data assessment. He's 6ft 9in, nimble and a boxing great - but it's the Gypsy King's internal monologue that makes him No 1. I applaud his self belief in those early pages of the book but I didn’t find it an interesting read at all. What will come afterwards, just living at home with his beloved wife, Paris, and their six children? Gloves Off is not a case of bare-fisted self-exposure, but instead a carefully edited version of events.

The most talented British heavyweight since Lennox Lewis (who boxed for Canada in the 1988 Seoul Olympics) and, some would argue (including Fury himself), the best in history, he has made some shockingly homophobic and antisemitic comments in the past. By the end of the book, as he surveys the potential contenders, he appears indistinguishable from all those predecessors who didn’t know when to say goodbye. Sometimes, the whole “Gypsy King” showman drama – being carried to the ring on a throne in one of the Wilder fights – may occlude Fury’s genuinely impressive achievements in the ring. Had this book been written by a third party, I suspect they would have been more aware of the regular contradictions that appear, with Tyson wanting to be both the hardest studier of the game, obsessing over detail, as well as the most relaxed free-wheeling guy who can train how he likes, eat how he likes and still come away with the victory.Told with unflinching honesty and rock-star charisma, Gloves Off by Tyson Fury is the autobiography of a sporting icon, the like of which we may never see again. I’m a massive Tyson Fury fan and enjoyed this book - wasn’t so keen on Jake Wood narrating it but got used to him.

With revealing intimacy, Tyson also shares new sides to his character: in the weeks before the biggest fight of his career in 2021 the devoted father was sleeping on a hospital floor in intensive care tending to his new-born daughter Athena who was born premature and fighting for her life. This book allowed me to make important reflections on my own faith and mental health, thank you for sharing your story Tyson. He looks back at his incredible life and career, examining what's really defined him, from his travelling upbringing to his fighting family, his beloved wife Paris and his 6 beautiful children, his mental health battles and his rise, fall and rise again in and out of the ring.

Tyson also shares a side of him that few people get to see and that in the weeks before the biggest fight of his career in 2021 he was sleeping on the hospital floor in intensive care following the premature birth of his daughter Athena who was fighting for her life.

If you are a fan of the sweet science, however, it is undeniable that Fury is one of the greats, and it's fascinating to see what kind of mindset got him there! From Irish traveller heritage, the "Gypsy King" is undefeated in 33 professional fights, winning 32 with 19 knockouts, and drawing once. This a very honest memoir that details Tysons trust in his faith and his mental health battles and also the struggles and sacrifices that both he and his family faced in becoming a champion. Tyson Fury in his rematch with US boxer Deontay Wilder for the WBC world heavyweight championship in Las Vegas, February 2020. Funny, frank and never less than entertaining, this is Tyson Fury at his very best, as you have never read before.
