Hoewel ik mij zeker vermaakt heb met dit boek, was ik ietwat teleurgesteld. Ik denk dat mijn verwachtingen te hoog lagen, je hoort immers zó veel positiefs over deze auteur! Doctor Who -kirjat ovat scifi-sarjaa, jonka kirjoja Jenny Colgan on kirjoittanut Jenny T. Colgan -nimen alla. Nämä kirjat poikkeavat täysin Jenny Colganille tyypillisistä romanttisista tarinoista.

I’m a little distracted from what she is saying at this point. Nedward is essentially vibrating in my arms. “I’m so sorry. My dog has fallen in love with you.” Born into a family of successful pilots, Morag is used to flying high. But when a tragic accident above the clouds grounds her, could the future she'd always imagined be suddenly out of reach?Jenny Colgan on yksi suosikkikirjailijoistani ja luen hänen kirjojaan silloin, kun kaipaan kevyttä hömppää. From the terrace at the top of the tower you get a remarkable view across the Firth of Forth, from bridges to Edinburgh and beyond. A shimmering, picture-perfect vision of Scotland that wouldn’t be out of place in one of her books.

Tämän sarjan kirjoissa mainitaan toisten osien hahmoja ja hahmot tuntevat toisensa, mutta kirjat eivät suoraan liity yhteen. Part of the fun and joy of writing is discovering things. If you’re invested in your characters, and I always really am, they don’t always do things you want them to. So you take a pencil for a walk and see what happens.” Romantic fiction is, she reminds me, the single biggest genre in publishing. That’s why the upcoming First Date, Scotland’s first ever romance festival, under the auspices of Edinburgh’s Lighthouse Book Festival at the Scottish Storytelling Centre later this month, is long overdue, Colgan says. Men can sometimes get it really wrong – and you can see that with Andrew Tate – about what women actually like. And also this idea that women only like really muscular men is so weird.

Best-selling Scots author Jenny Colgan on what men get wrong about women

There is another romance going on in Colgan’s books, of course. A romance with Scotland. Colgan returned home eight years ago, to be closer to her mother who was seriously ill at the time (she sadly passed away in 2016). Before, Colgan had been living in England, Europe and America for 20 years. What is the country she has found since she returned? As she awaits rescue, might Morag discover that a remote Scottish island, cut off from real-life, is exactly the place she needs to be? I normally like Jenny Colgan books but this one was horribly sloppy and inaccurate. I also found Morag obnoxious. If the pilot character had been a man, he would have come across as an arrogant jerk. Did Colgan not see this in how she wrote Morag?

Choosing your partner is incredibly important. It feels like you have to get everything right, line everything up”Jos tämä kuuluu niihin syihin, joiden vuoksi olet ihastunut Jenny Colganin kirjoihin, suosittelen tutustumaan myös näiden kirjailijoiden kirjoihin:

And even then, she points out, it can still go badly wrong. “It’s just fascinating. And not everybody, but most people would like somebody to share their life with. And somebody really simpatico they can rub along with. It just never stops being interesting.” Ik geniet altijd van de verhalen van Jenny Colgan. Net zoals anders neemt Colgan ons mee in het verhaal, verbindt ons met de hoofdpersonen en geeft ons een warm gevoel. The Bookshop on the Corner / The Little Shop of Happy Ever After (2016) – * Uusia lukuja ja onnellisia loppuja (2020) Koti Pikkusaarella -sarjassa Skotlantilaiselta Muren saarelta kotoisin oleva Flora on muuttanut Lontooseen ja työskentelee siellä lakifirman avustajana. Sattuman kautta hän kuitenkin päätyy takaisin kotisaarelleen valmistamaan herkullisia ruokia saaren asukkaille ja turisteille. Kirjasarjan kirjat kannattaa muuten lukea järjestyksessä, sillä niissä seurataan samoja henkilöitä ja juoni kehittyy kirjojen myötä, mutta A Very Distant Shore/Maailman ääriin on erillinen lyhyt novelli, jonka voi lukea mihin väliin tahansa.
