All entries are sorted alphabetically (in English) according to their Romanized spellings. What's nice is if you read something such at "yomitai" and know that the "yomi" part means "read" but aren't sure what "tai" means, you just skip to the "T" section, look up "-tai" and there you go--a thorough explanation with detailed examples and a breakdown of how to conjugate it on your own. Containing about 3,000 sentence patterns and samples with complete explanations and comparisons with similar expressions, A Handbook of Japanese Grammar Patterns for Teachers and Learners is among the most comprehensive Japanese grammar books today.

I did read the introductory material and it does exclusively refer to the reader as "he" but it has a nice basic overview of Japanese grammar written in clear language (that language being English) with simple examples and includes an explanation of the passive that actually made some sense. The same cannot be said for the mystifying section on viewpoint, which while clarifying the thought behind the mechanics of the various giving/receiving verbs, also offered a bunch of perspective rules, all of which you could break if you were writing fiction in English, and I assume in Japanese as well....? Except, in what non-fiction sense would you ever need to speak from the POV of a dead person? I don't know, but it's something this book cautions you against doing. If there's one thing we seem to focus on a lot at Tofugu, it's online resources. If you're learning Japanese, you can get almost everything you need online. Online textbooks, resources, apps, and even tutors can be acquired. Physical textbooks, dictionaries, and flashcards are becoming a thing of the past. Of course, each of these sections have the same level of explanation, example sentences, and notes just like the first one. You'll know more than you've ever wanted to know about no should you go through this.

It tells you what kind of grammar it is, gives you a short elevator-pitch sized description of what that grammar point does, and then tries to give you the closest English translation. In addition, it gives you some key sentences to help you to understand how it's used, and then it goes into more details with examples, more explanation, and notes. And so, if you’re learning a decidedly complex language like Japanese, it’s important to come to grips with grammar. And while you can do these with the help of Japanese learning books, you can be a little bit more specific by reading Japanese grammar books. Why learn Japanese grammar from books? I also love the use of many various names in the example sentences repeated throughout the book--helps to remember kanji names. The way that I used this book was to have it as a reference. Anytime I would run into a new piece of grammar that I hadn’t seen before, I would go to the book and look it up.

What most people I’ve talk to say is that you’ll get the most out of the book once you’ve already learned the most common features of the Japanese language. It then provides a lot of helpful Japanese examples that help the reader see and fully understand it. There was a nice touch in most grammar points to help differentiate them from similar ones. The little nuances between them make a difference, and I appreciate them pointing those out. Anon Random: For sentence cards only. Between 1 and 6 sentence are randomly selected for the front of the card. Unlike the Core Random style above, the sentences will remain consistent across devices per day. Source.

The only real criticism I have is that some of the English language explanations aren't as clear as they could be. However, this book more than makes up for those occasional dictionaries through its extensive use of examples.

A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar - The Tofugu Review

Fortunately, the vocabulary used in this book is quite simple and easy to understand. That point alone sets this book apart from most textbook explanations of grammar, in which the authors usually feel the need to use whatever vocabulary was most recently introduced. Here the vocabulary words are simple and at an easy beginner level, allowing the student to focus on the grammar and not on the vocabulary. Japanese has the reputation of being one of the hardest languages to learn for English speakers, partly because of grammar. While I believe it’s not necessarily harder than other languages, the Japanese sentence structure is very different from English. That’s just one of the things you have to get used to when learning Japanese. The language also heavily relies on particles and there are 188 of these in Japanese! Plus, there are multiple levels of politeness. But it’s also nice to not worry about noun genders, plural forms, and complicated conjugations. The third and main portion of the text is devoted to descriptions and explanations of the basic grammar items. A DICTIONARY OF BASIC JAPANESE GRAMMAR offers a new approach to the interpretation of Japanese grammar and provides, in dictionary format, a convenient reference of grammar-related expressions. Accurate and concise, the grammar explanations incorporate the results of recent research in Japanese linguistics.

Anyway, for some of the entries you also get notes from the authors that might explain a nuance to the grammar, or talk about certain situations where there are exceptions. You should get this one if you're at an intermediate level or above. You won't use it nearly as much as the basic dictionary, but it will contain some grammar you can't find in volume one. Grammar in this book is still quite useful and common too, so just using it to learn new grammar is an option as well. My guess is that this book will cover JLPT levels 3-2, and maybe a bit of 1. A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar Pretty much everything you'd ever want to know about a grammar point is included, the images above don't really do this dictionary justice. Appendixes include: conjunction tables for verbs, adjectives, and the copula; semantic classification of verbs (continual, punctual, continual-punctual, etc); everyone's favorite transitive/intransitive verb pairs; connection forms of important expressions; ko-so-a-do; numerals and counters, with a little chart for when to expect pronunciation changes; compound words. I think the reason is that grammar is an abstract concept. At least for me, it always took a little extra work to remember it compared to other vocabulary like nouns or verbs. One thing that should be mentioned is that this book is the first in a three part series. There is also a book that covers intermediate grammar, and a book that covers advanced grammar. The Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series is simply the best grammar series I've ever come across in any language. The authors do an excellent job of combining complicated linguistic explanations replete with examples of both correct and incorrect sentences. Everything is easy to handle, even for beginners. Japanese grammar does not seem as foreboding and complicated with this excellent book at hand.
