I've never smelled the older version, but this formulation smells sweet (more like a caramel sweetness) and I find it close to a gourmand scent rather than an oriental scent. This one is different than traditional Avon kind of scents and I guess Avon is experimenting with gourmands this year (when you think about the other recent launches). I loved wearing it then but always thought there could be something more done to it to make it more enchanting just as its name suggests "Mesmerize". I find Theodosius from the Carnaval Diabolique collection to be amazingly rich and warm and might fit the bill. At the start, Mesmerize has an almost-effervescent aspect like some 50s-era fragrances (think Moustache or Tabu)and the apple is the key note (although it is like a SweetTarts version).

The spices and wood and amber all blend perfectly on me, while the citrus notes gently hang in the background. I tried this based on the fact that I have found some amazing perfumes by Avon - which most have been compliment magnets. Perhaps a little part of me is a tad bit resentful of this usurper, this pretender to the crown, but only a tad. It has the hallmarks of a late 19th century fougère like the original namesake Fougère Royale (1882), which it shares with Zino Davidoff (1986), but doesn't head into as much floral skank, supplanting it with oriental spice and woods a la the aforementioned Chanel scents that were contemporary with this.

If Mesmerize came into this world today in the form of a new release from Byredo or BDK Parfums, for example (I hold both brands in high esteem and am only mentioning them here as examples! I have a bottle of Mesmerize from about 6 or 8 years ago, and a bottle of Nautica Latitude Longitude from just after it came out, like 2000/2001 I believe. I've always loved the smell, and after wearing it I finally realized, that's what keeps mesmerize in my collection. In my experiences with the same man wearing this scent on different ocassions the expected result overcame. I've always had some degree of synesthesia and I remember considering Mesmerize a "triangular" fragrance.Avon has Imari Elixir, Imari Seduction, and Imari Mystique (now discontinued) which I prefer over Avon's Mesmerize in the blue bottle. I really liked it, I am going to keep the cologne for autumn,it is a very warm,comforting scent,just let it settle down on your skin. After reading the description and the notes, I'd expected something deep, multi-dimensional, maybe oriental - as myrrh, wood and spices might suggest. I don't know why the note of white apricots isn't listed here, since it's the highest and the best of this perfume. It is embedded in a spicy, aromatic amber shell, which increasingly comes to the fore as the fragrance develops and remains throughout the entire fragrance.I'm quite impressed by this fragrance, and I think it's closest to Burberrys for Men (1991), though it's also got strong similarities to Zino. So I went crazy looking for a small bottle I had in a box were I keep those perfumes I don't wear often.

Then it gets some spicy hint added in, and the exotic spicy comes and goes along a good about-one-hour-long clean powdery feeling (the powdery is cold here, like the fresh coldness you can inhale from some baby powder). Here's the best part - Mesmerize is a dead ringer for Nautica Latitude Longitude - not kind of like it, not just top notes. Amber often goes a bit smoky-sweet on me, but this is a vintage blend (layered with the vintage body lotion as well, which I suspect is where the majority of that powder is coming from. I wanted to stay embraced in it forever and that makes the old man feel real good about 'you the man', kind of dude. Since Mesmerize is fresh, interesting, and likeable, I had no qualms about gifting it to a male relation for Christmas.I layered it with Avon's Vibrant Fruity on one hand and with Pur Blanca on the other and I guess this is it - a perfect base for further layering.
