Even if I don’t really know the player well, I want to support and encourage these books so that people of all genders see better representation in football. She is an ambassador for the BBC's mental health platform, Headspace, and holds honorary doctorates from the University of East London and University of Hertfordshire. Sometimes the headlines are the trolls pushed me into therapy, but there’s been a lot of things that have gone on in my life that I’d never dealt with or spoken about.

Alex is one of the UK's most in-demand presenters, appearing on The One Show, Children in Need, Sport Relief and ITV's The Games. From the football cages of East London to broadcasting to millions, the engine powering Alex Scott’s remarkable journey has always been her resilience. In her emotional interview on The One Show, Alex opened up about some of the darkest points over the course of her career. The trolling and abuse that I got from what I was doing work-wise was just the part that pushed me, finally, into therapy. The later chapters on guilt and softness hit home for me - but the letter to her Mum was difficult reading for some reason. There was this underlying current that, somehow, playing in America meant we were getting too big for our boots. Not in an intrusive way, it's clear and calm narration, but there are points where you can hear her tearing up, others where the smirk or smile on her face is clearly imaginable and it enhances the book so much.

Last year, Alex confirmed she was just seven years old when her father left, taking almost all of their possessions with her. I love playing (I play twice a week these days, despite my advancing age) and I want more people to be able to experience that joy if they are interested in playing. The autobiography of Alex Scott MBE, the former full-back who made 140 appearances for the England Women's team during a long and successful career and played most of her club football for Arsenal and for Boston Breakers in the USA. This is a passion project and I hope readers enjoy it, but importantly can take their own strength from it.I enjoyed every minute of this book and appreciate her willingness to sacrifice some of her privacy for TRUTH and inspiring others to do the same! She helped Arsenal in their historic 'quadruple' season, in which they won all of their trophy competitions, and was later appointed as the team's captain. I enjoyed reading it as a football fan, but I dont think you necessarily have to follow the sport to enjoy this book, as a lot of it is about her upbringing, relationships and mental health.

Alex is one of the UK's most in-demand presenters, appearing on The One Show, Children in Need, Sport Relief and the forthcoming The Real Games. Alex is one of the UK's most in-demand presenters, appearing on The One Show , Children in Need , Sport Relief and ITV's The Games .Alex talks very deeply and profoundly of her life, where she has struggled emotionally and mentally.

Biographies often tread a fine line - there’s already a sort of hubris in writing one, so how to not push it too far and sound too egotistical? She shares how she has tackled these challenges and that sometimes the strongest thing you can do in the face of adversity is to show your most vulnerable side to the world. I suppose now she knows my triggers, so when I'm pulling away and if I'm going through stuff, she's there. Her personal journey is empathetic and will sadly be a relatable in places for many readers, but the difficulties are tempered by Scott’s good-natured determination to take life on and win.Her excitement was infectious - she had played with some of these players, back when she had to work in the laundry at Arsenal (the same club she played for! The timeline was a bit all over the place, so slightly confusing at times for me, but overall this is a solid 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book and appreciate her willingness to sacrifice some of her privacy for TRUTH and inspiring others to do the same! Century will publish an incisive and candid book – How (Not) To Be Strong – from broadcaster and former footballing star Alex in September 2022. Former professional football (soccer to US folks) player and current broadcaster Alex Scott opens up about her life.
