Description

A humorous children's book written by Roald Dahl, and illustrated by Quentin Blake. It was written in 1979, and first published in 1980. I really was not taken with the story, but it wasn't terrible. Give me James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or The Fantastic Mr Fox any day. It’s a new kind,” Mrs. Twit said, taking a mouthful from her own plate which of course had no worms. “It’s called Squiggly Spaghetti. It’s delicious. Eat it up while it’s nice and hot.”

Mrs. Twit removes her glass eye and drops it in her husband's beer mug while he isn't looking. It isn't until he empties the mug that he sees the eye sitting in there, startling him something awful. Mrs. Twit laughs, gloating that this proves she is always watching him.George's mischievous adventures are perfect to explore themes of invention, feelings and the power of words. Lead creative writing challenges and PSHE conversations guided by George's story. Using their friend the Roly-Poly Bird as an interpreter of languages, Muggle-Wump and his wife and children convey the warning that any bird landing on the Big Dead Tree will be cooked into Mrs. Twit's Bird Pie. When Mr. Twit, in retaliation, spreads glue on the monkeys' cage (which serves as a substitute perch), the monkeys alter the warning. The birds end up landing on the Twits' roof. Listen to the audiobook version of the story. Could you retell the story using accents and expressions like this? But that’s enough of that. We can’t go on forever watching these two disgusting people doing disgusting things to each other. We must get ahead with the story. Here is a picture of Mr and Mrs Twit’s house and garden. Some house! It looks like a prison. And not a window anywhere.” a b c Dellatto, Marisa (20 February 2023). The rest of the book comprises two unpleasant people being unpleasant to each other in not particularly humorous ways, followed by the addition of monkeys and a magical bird who then outwit them in a rather unconvincing manner. En Los cretinos vamos a conocer a la señora y el señor Cretino, un horrible matrimonio que pasa los días molestándose entre ellos, compitiendo por ver quien hace la jugarreta más grande al otro. Twits are ugly people who do horrible things to each other and others. They are not nice, and they are negative people who have been negative so long that the negativity has made them ugly.My kid's grandparents gave my kid a Roald Dahl collection for Christmas, so now I'm reading the stories out loud. This was the book where I'm starting to regret the whole thing.

The book opens with a rather strange tirade against men with beards. But fair enough, it's just a fashion choice. What I found far less palatable as something being channeled into the heads of children was the assertion that ugly people are evil (have ugly thoughts). This is basically an extension of medieval thinking to the end that bad things happen to bad people and if misfortune befalls someone it's safe to assume that they had it coming. Roald Dahl's Completely Revolting Recipes: A Collection of Delumptious Favourites. Random House, 2 November 2009. Mr. Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever.”Roald Dahl, a British author famous for his darkly funny, macabre, and often comically violent children’s books, published The Twits in 1980. Like many of his novels, it features grotesquely evil adult characters who prey on weaker children and eventually suffer a brutal, outsized comeuppance for their horrible behavior. Asked why he wrote this book, Dahl said that it was meant as an indictment of beards, which he thought were unhygienic. The Twits, who were once retired circus trainers, continuously abuse a family of monkeys (known as the Muggle-Wumps) that are in their care. Spurred on by their desire to create the first "upside-down monkey circus," the Twits force the Muggle-Wumps to endure grueling training every day by threatening to beat them if they do not submit. Phil Johnston, the Oscar-nominated helmer of Ralph Breaks the Internet, is directing the project, with Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong as co-directors. Johnston, whose writing credits include Academy Award winner Zootopia, is also penning the script with Meg Favreau and producing alongside Maggie Malone. The animation will be produced at Jellyfish Pictures.
