Also included is an additional blade holder, this allows you to sharpen removable steel that isn’t attached to the skates, such as edge steel. Fortunately, there are ways to sharpen your skate blade and make sure it’s nice and sharp so you can enjoy a smooth ride on the ice. The best way to do this is by using a sharpening kit which you can buy at most sporting goods stores or online retailers. These kits come with everything you need to properly sharpen your skate blade so it’s at its peak performance every time you hit the rink. The Base Of Your Blade Needs To Be Flat Are you getting ready to go skating with your favorite pair of blades? Before you go, make sure that the base of your blades is flat. Without this, your blades won’t work as well while cutting through the ice. That’s because a flat base allows for proper weight distribution and stability. Of course, how sharp you make them depends on your skating style and performance goals, so if you’re a beginner, it’s best to go for a duller skate; this will mean better control when turning and stopping. Whether you choose standard sharpening or BFD, it really all comes down to personal preference. How often should figure skates be sharpened?

We are sorry that this service is not available for other areas of the UK. Please refer to the following prices:We use automated skate sharpeners that provide a machine-like perfection to each and every sharpening. This means for customers who are mailing-in custom profiled steel, these machines will not reset your custom profile. For custom profiling of our own, we use the ProSharp AS1001 machine.

Figure out the radius size you need. The default that most skate shops use is a 1/2" radius, which is standard for young skaters. A smaller radius will create a deeper hollow, creating better grip and more drag. A larger radius, on the other hand, will produce a shallow hollow with worse grip and less drag. Grip determines maneuverability, while less drag allows for greater speed.

Why Do Skates Need to be sharpened?

Our skilled team of Blademaster-trained staff at Willies sharpen your blades to your preference and are on hand to advise if a change in hollow could improve your performance. You can find us at 52a Earlsdon Street, Coventry, CV5 6EJ. Ice skaters should always take extra caution when they are on the ice because their blades can easily cut through flesh and bone. Even with protective gear, skateblade cuts can still cause major injury if it strikes in the wrong area.
