Smile is a coming-of-age tale, set in a San Francisco suburb from 1989 to 1992, in which Telgemeier struggles with preteen life after losing two front teeth in an accident. Smile was published as a graphic novel with eight chapters by the Graphix imprint of Scholastic Inc. Most notably, Raina figures out that she doesn't need to put up with friends who don't like her for who she is, and she finds strength in following her own interests.
