Description

If you started watching Netflix’s thrilling new British series Bodies you might have noticed a placard dedicated to Si Spencer at the end of the first episode. Spencer is also mentioned in the opening credits of the show, and it makes sense given he wrote the comics that the series is based on. LONDON, 2014. As racist rioters wreak havoc in the name of their prejudiced patriotism, Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan leads the fight against them. As a Muslim cop, she’s English to the core. But the corpse she’s uncovered may reveal something rotten deep below the surface… First I need to point out this groovy cover - great right? Draws the eye, it's pin-up, pulp, fun, and blood splattered. Good news, because Bodies is out on Netflix now! It dropped at 8am on 19th October, so get ready to binge watch. Is there a trailer for Netflix's Bodies? Because there are a lot of ideas here, HH, Mithras, dybbuks, and so on, that you have to know a bit about to make sense of the ending.

Bodies, is here! - Yahoo News UK Netflix’s new crime drama, Bodies, is here! - Yahoo News UK

The Yorkshire Post covered in late June 2022 that Hull had been transformed into the 1940s. They state: Satanic Farces" (with co-author Gordon Rennie and art by Dean Ormston, in Judge Dredd Megazine (vol. 3) #4–7, 1995) In summary, for intense fans of the genre, this is probably a winner but for me as a more casual fan this blew my head apart. It’s graphic, innovative and complex but maybe a bit too complex for my addled mind. The first inspector, the dedicated Edmond Hillinghead, investigates the murder of an unidentified male in the 1890s. His initial discovery of the crime is then followed by Inspector Charles Whiteman’s investigation in 1940 while the Blitz ravages London. And yet, as is clearly evident by the diversity of the characters and their circumstances, English identity can mean a million and one things to any and all of us, and is inextricably entangled in our endlessly complicated history and melting pot of cultures and influences, in our finest moments and our most shameful. This is reflected in Bodies not just in character but also in language and setting.

Edmond was my favorite with his bizarre secrets and even if the events in his time period were just as twisted as the others, it seemed somehow less flummoxing. Karl just comes across as an asshat who dresses the best. Shahara worked as a different, strong woman who didn't take crap from her co-workers but retained a sense of humor. I detested the annoying Maplewood - she and the other characters in 2050 irked me. It’s being filmed throughout the United Kingdom in several big cities including Hull, Leeds, Grimsby, Bradford and Rotherham. If you're looking for a gritty, British crime drama to binge-watch on Netflix, then you need to put Bodies on your list. The title is not descriptive. Well, there ARE four bodies, but this is about ideas, not bodies. Murdered bodies, okay, but it's what gets these bodies murdered that the book is about. If it's REALLY about bodies in some metaphysical sense, then it is too esoterically configured here.

The four detectives could be classed as “outsiders”, ie. the non-traditional standard as opposed to the stereotypically “normal” British types: a gay man, a Jewish man, a Muslim woman, a mentally-ill young woman. But they’re all British - they are Britain, and they make up our country as much as any Anglo-Saxon straight person. Each is a strand of DNA in the national body. As for Spencer, he was a long-time comic book writer and editor who has worked in both the British and American comics industry and often collaborated with fellow British comic book writer Dean Ormston. Spencer has worked on projects like The Vinyl Underground, Crisis, and more. He also contributed to Judge Dredd Magazine, writing for the executioner for several years and creating multiple spinoff characters.

Yes, there is! The official trailer for the series dropped on 12 October, where we get a proper look at the genre-bending mystery thriller. And. of course, the incredible acting from the legend that is Stephen Graham. He knew a lot of people. Simon was friendly and approachable – and he was very supportive of other artists and writers. I know he was a mentor figure for some up-and-coming artists. He was well-known for being very inventive with his writing.” This may remind you of some beloved and equally complex streaming television mini-series - - the weird, vague ones that hold your attention in spite of it all. I loved the premise of BODIES. There’s a weird mystery here, which connects each era - - the mutilated dead body of a one-eyed man. Such a novel idea, to tell four separate tales with this linking device. Also, four artists who are completely different from each other, altering their styles to suit the tenor of the scene and time their segment takes place in. Spencer writes the segments differently, further distinguishing each by having the main characters provide some of the narration in the text boxes and revealing their idiosyncrasies (all fascinating). The phrase "Know you are loved" is said throughout, in every period. Where does that come from? Somebody tell me!! I assume it is something commonplace that I just don't know. I like intertextual clues-y books, I teach English, but I had no idea here.

The use of "HH" is a marker throughout is confusing, though Sam's double helix theory is probably right. Until I read his review I literally had no idea what was going on. In June 2014, Vertigo published the first issue of his creator-owned monthly eight issue limited series Bodies.Bodies’ third installment sees Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan’s investigation in 2014 set among the chaos of race riots, and the final part of the series is told by a woman named Maplewood in a futuristic era set in 2050 when a techno-apocalypse scrambles civilian minds. Si Spencer (1961 – 16 February 2021) [1] [2] was a British comic book writer and TV dramatist and editor whose work appeared in British comics such as Crisis. He often collaborated with Dean Ormston and later moved to the American comics industry.

So: Bodies is a great read - maybe a bit too long at 8 issues; it might’ve been more effective at 6 - but it’s an enjoyable journey that’s worth taking. There’s a lot to like here and Spencer’s created a rich, ambitious and unique story with some excellent characters and a fine mystery at its core. England and Englishness are central to Bodies - it's essentially a story of identity and culture. I don't think I'm giving too much away when I say that this not really a murder mystery at all, and the corpse, reappearing in the same location to different people at different times - people whose speech and thoughts carry occasional echoes of one another - has a symbolic significance to England. Based on the graphic novel by Si Spencer, the new series (which is out now!) follows four different police detectives from different time periods who discover the exact same body in Whitechapel, East London. The eight episode series stars Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Shira Haas, Amaka Okafor, Kyle Soller and Stephen Graham.

Netflix’s Bodies will likely continue in the same vein, as a very stylized project, in the hands of director Marco Kreutzpaintner who is known for 2018’s thriller Beat as well as the sci-fi romance, Soulmates, from 2020. Also directing is Doctor Who’s Haolu Wang, a Chinese writer and director whose intensely psychological and emotional works include the award-winning The Pregnant Ground from 2019. Writers for the series include Torchwood’s Paul Tomalin (who is also an executive producer for the show) along with Gangs of London’s Danusia Samal. LONDON, 2050. As the mind-scrambling pulsewave plagues the last survivors of a terrifying techno-apocalypse, the amnesiac young woman known only as Maplewood can barely understand the body she’s discovered. But this ritual killing is identical to those from decades past-and the link between them all is stronger, and stranger, than anyone could dream… Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Kyle Soller, Amaka Okafor, Stephen Graham and Shira Hass – Pictures: Getty Images
