The juxtaposition of Polly’s poor, but loving, home life, surrounded by siblings, with her time spent in Clara’s middle-class home, where Clara is an only child, is stunningly written, with tiny details that speak so loud. Book looks great but was hoping that the accompanying pack would be a little like a panini book and magazine monthly I used to get as a child from which I read my way through lots of children’s classics I would never have come across or understood.

Despite drawing crowds of 50,000, women’s football was outlawed by the Football Association in 1921, who deemed it ‘unsuitable for females’. It somehow manages to be a feel good story of feminism and an insightful and often painful social history at the same time. This is an unusual story set a century ago at a time when it was not socially acceptable for women to play football. There are glimpses of times in Nancy's life that would be fun to know more about such as her foray into Italian politics. I am an independent online bookseller, based near Southampton, Hampshire in the South of England, with approximately 8,000 books - new, second hand, scarce, hard to find and out-of-print books – and have been in business for more than 19 years. From epic test matches and titans of the game like Lara, Warne and Tendulkar, to his own childhood love for the sport, Mark gives us his informed, personal and fascinating views on cricket - the world's other beautiful game.

This book covers many aspects of the game from personal recollection to discussion of many of the challenges facing the game and looks back and evaluates great plyers. Nancy claims not to have read the newspaper reports of his affairs and not to have asked Sven for his version. It contained information that helped with comprehension - author fact file, historical context etc plus fun activities based on the book.As both a former player and now a professional observer and commentator on the game, he knows all the key figures of the sport and has witnessed first-hand some of cricket's greatest moments. I loved how in Our Beautiful Game the characters are based on real women who pioneered women’s football all over the world.

It is the memoir of a complex and fascinating man much more interesting and nuanced than the sporting celebrity with whom most of us are familiar. A brilliant broadcaster with a wonderful knowledge of the game and, above all, an infectious passion for cricket. This might be a tad spoilery, but I think it’s important to discuss so that you know what kind of book it is: the narrative is very aware of the urge to have a happy ending, and actively explores the tension the reader feels as the end of the book approaches, thinking, ‘he must be coming back soon, surely’. Evidence of its impact is continuing to pile up, from Jeff Astle's death in 2002 being ruled as a result of heading footballs to Sir Bobby Charlton becoming the fifth member of England's 1966 World Cup-winning side to be diagnosed with the disease. As both a former player and now a professional observer and commentator on the game, he knows all the key figures of the sport and has witnessed first-hand some of cricket’s greatest moments. Having sought the support and permission from Bobby’s family at the wake following the funeral, within days, I sat down at my keyboard, as I have done so often over the past few years, having written five previous books on the history of the club that we all love, including my last book on my very first football hero, Derek Kevan, aka ‘The Tank’ and the words just started to pour out of my very soul for the ensuing five months or so. She is the author of numerous books for children, including My Digger is Bigger, Eat Your People, the Shrinking Violet series, the Princess DisGrace series, the Bella Broomstick series, Not Yet, Zebra, Calm Down, Zebra and Our Beautiful Game. There is tragedy in this book, and it’s one I’d only recommend for children old enough to discuss its themes maturely. It gives you a sense of who they were and lets them live on in the minds of girls and boys today in a creative way.

We’re delighted to be sharing this dramatic and inspiring story with you to enjoy in a book club setting – whether with friends, family or your school mates. Alternatively, we suggest that you visit your local library and request to borrow a copy from a friendly librarian. She is also a successful lawyer with a keen interest in politics and world affairs - a woman for all seasons. Nancy is just as at home in combat jacket and fatigues on the streets of Ramallah as lunching at Claridges.

Earlier I said that football wasn’t the only main theme in this brilliant book, and that is because I think feminism and women’s roles and rights are just as huge a part of this book, on and off the football field. He helped to lift English cricket out of the sporting gloom of the late 1990s; and now he has chronicled his era as if he were one of us. We share a hero in Frederick II, the Holy Roman Emperor way ahead of his time, which is definitely a niche part of history. Packed with facts about the history of football, the great disasters of the twentieth century and the black footballers who blazed a trail in the UK.
