In mid July, London’s Heathrow airport decided to limit the number of departing passengers to 100,000 per day. Here are a few tips on how to secure the best flight price and make your journey as smooth as possible. You and your employer must agree in writing that the 30% ruling is applicable - The application for the 30% ruling must be agreed on by both employer and employee. If the 30% ruling is fully applicable, your gross salary will be reduced by 30%. This may have implications for your potential unemployment or disability benefits since these benefits are based on your taxable salary. Therefore the tax authorities require that both employer and employee are aware of these consequences. This agreement in writing can be done by means of a clause in your employment contract or as an addendum to your employment contract. Last month we reported that annual flight movements would be limited to 460,000 through until September 2024, in a bid to cut air and noise pollution.

The statement also said that “In addition to negatively impacting the Dutch economy, the capacity reduction would significantly reduce travel options and connectivity for consumers”. The staff shortages resulted in miles-long queues and thousands of passengers missing their flights. On the downside, they are likely to cause flight prices to go up. To cope with the capacity limits, airlines sometimes have to cancel flights, with British Airways cancelling over 10,000 flights to or from Heathrow.

How long will airport caps last at Schiphol?

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has an extensive international route network that connects the Netherlands to the world. The airport is a departure point for visits to friends and family in faraway places, leisure travel and business travel. Being so well-connected to the rest of the world contributes significantly to the Netherlands’ prosperity.

However, the airport is located in a highly urbanised area in one of the busiest parts of the country, and has negative effects for those who live in the vicinity. Local residents are exposed to aircraft noise and are also concerned about the impact of the airport on their health, the natural environment and the climate more generally. The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), which supervises the conduct of the financial markets. The streetcar is often used by tourists. In contrast to the underground metro, you can also discover the city during the journey. Thanks to the dense network of lines, many sightseeing highlights and museums can be reached by streetcar. You may also opt to downgrade to Standard Digital, a robust journalistic offering that fulfils many user’s needs. Compare Standard and Premium Digital here. The legal action was initiated by the KLM Group, which accounts for around 60 per cent of traffic at Schiphol, and is being supported by industry bodies Airlines for Europe and the European Regions Airline Association. Five carriers including KLM, Delta and easyJet are to challenge the Dutch government’s decision to cap flights at Amsterdam Schiphol airport on environmental grounds. What are your thoughts on the Dutch government’s decision to cap flight numbers at Schiphol? Join in the discussion on our forum here.

According to Clive Wratten, the Business Travel Association’s chief executive, “September and October have been hampered by fewer flights during the vitally important post-summer business period, and the removal of the [Heathrow] cap will enable business travel to grow again. As a direct result, business travellers have been faced with an up to 30% increase on the cost of their flights compared to pre-pandemic prices.” You must have specific experience or expertise that is not or is rarely available in the Netherlands - These skills are determined by several factors such as salary, age, employment history, education and level of employment. None of these are conclusive but the combination of all aspects determines your specific skills. At present, the specific skills are assumed to be present if the minimum salary requirement is met (see below). A not-so-secret-anymore tip is the tram line number 2. It is popular with sightseeing tourists, as many of its stops are nearby attractions. This line will get you to the flower market, Royal Palace on the dam, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Stedelijk museum for example and passing through all the canals of Amsterdam’s famous Canal Belt. Your gross salary has to surpass a minimum (adjusted annually) - In 2022, the annual taxable salary for an employee cannot be less than €39,467 (in 2021 it was €38,961). However, a minimum salary of €30,001 is applicable for those who have completed a master's degree and are younger than 30 years old (in 2021 it was €29,616). This means that, when the 30% tax ruling is taken into account, your salary cannot become less than these amounts. Salary thresholds are updated on 1 January every year. For cost savings, you can change your plan at any time online in the “Settings & Account” section. If you’d like to retain your premium access and save 20%, you can opt to pay annually at the end of the trial. In addition the International Air Transport Association and “a number of airlines” will also go to court to initiate proceedings against the Dutch government. This number of flight movements will allow the airport to maintain its international route network. The possible opening of Lelystad Airport for leisure travel could also contribute to the destinations served by Schiphol, provided that a nature permit is granted to Lelystad airport and the issue of the low approach routes is resolved. All this will take some time, so the government will not make a decision on Lelystad Airport before the summer of 2024. Calling the annual cap “incomprehensible”, the statement said that “The airlines have already made multi-billion euros investments to meet near- and long-term goals in line with their own decarbonization trajectories as well as government policies, while the government’s justification hinges on operational restrictions with no consideration of alternative workable solutions to effect noise reduction”. We are embracing the targets set for reducing noise levels and CO2 emissions, investing billions in fleet renewal and SAF procurement that will ultimately supersede these targets while maintaining our network that serves 170 destinations worldwide.
