When it becomes clear that with every tip-off they are walking into a trap designed to kill them, too, Ava and Luc know that finding the truth could mean paying the ultimate price. This addictive story flows so well. I was seriously captivated by the story and before I knew what time it was I damn near done! Had to slow it down some.

This was an incredible read and the author has done a fantastic job with it. I wish it had known about the DV element in it though before I started as this does trigger me, being a DV survivor, but that does not take away a thing from this book. Even though this is the 7th book in the series, it was the first one I had read and it was absolutely fine as a standalone. I am always left impatiently waiting for the next book of this series but the ending of this left me truly horrified that I will have to wait for the next book to find out what’s next for this pair of characters. The ending was absolutely brilliant and without giving away any spoilers has been the very best yet! It was in Perfect Silence (Book #4) that Ava tells Luc, “Police work turns you into an emotional sieve. You start off with so much hope and good intention. Little by little it runs out of you and you’re left with only the hard bits of yourself.” This is especially evident in One for Sorrow. While Ava is a no nonsense, boots-on-the ground detective, she has an unshakeable compassion for victims and little by little, it is revealed to the reader the extent of the impact these horrific crimes have on her, physically and mentally, and yet, she perseveres. The reader can only hope that Ava takes action before she allows herself to become the sieve she once cautioned Luc about.

Publication Order of Helen Sarah Fields Standalone Novels

Helen Fields resides with her husband David in Hampshire. They have children together and two dogs. She has a deep love of licorice in addition to writing books and reading them. One for Sorrow by Helen Fields is a highly recommended police procedural and the seventh book in the D.I. Callanach series. Helen Field's DI Luc Callenach and DCI Ava Turner series keeps up dramatic suspense in the latest installment. While it is interesting to begin the series with the first book, each can be read as a stand-alone.

I genuinely feel this is one of the best books I’ve read all year! Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell me how over the past 3 days I kept blurting out how much I’m enjoying it and I can’t stop reading - even to those that have no interest in my love affair with books! This book is thrilling and heartbreaking in equal measure and massive changes happen that will have profound impact on the books that follow. This is Helen Fields’ END GAME and once the dust has settled we’re going to have to deal with the fall-out. The case is taking everything they have physically and mentally but they know that every time they attend a scene they could be making the ultimate sacrifice.I have read Helen Field's standalone novel The Shadow Man and I was very much impressed with her work that I have decided to read all her books. Well, One for Sorrow is actually a DI Callanach series and even though I haven't read a single one of DI Callanch series, I actually didn't mind and read this book more like a standalone novel. And boy, I enjoyed reading this book so much! As they try and figure out who is killing people in the nastiest of ways and what the connection is between them all, Ava has to contend with her grief in losing friends and colleagues, an overbearing supervisor and her frustration of not being able to fix the whole world's woes. I love this series and I am hoping it isn't the ending of it. I saw where other reviewers have been wondering, too and it sounded like the author wasn't too keen on writing more. That would be a bloody travesty as it is a tremendous set of stories and there's still more to come from this group of characters, in my humble opinion !! I wasn't keen she detracted from her regular "perfect" titles with this instalment, either.....
