In May 2000 the Whitbread Beer Company was acquired by the Belgian brewer Interbrew, which owned Stella Artois. Mind you, similar competition, along with the malt-extract Lass O’Gowrie beers which I found very poor. Boddingtons was best known for Boddingtons Bitter (Boddies), a straw-golden, hoppy bitter which was one of the first beers to be packaged in cans containing a widget, giving it a creamy draught-style head.

Just a notch better than that awful Pub Ale perhaps, but I am not even convinced of it, it has been a very long time since I had that one. The hops used in Boddingtons provide a bitterness that balances the sweetness of the malt, while yeast ferments the sugars in the wort to produce alcohol. You could drink buckets of this but you wouldn't enjoy it much - if that isn't authenticity, I don't know what is. This number grew rapidly over the next three years to 79, the height of Boddington’s popularity, with 31 per cent of their tied house estate represented.Tawny-coloured premium ale borrows sweet raisin, biscuit and dried-fruit notes from the Crystal malt, while fresh, piney herbs emanate from the hops. After the acquisition, the company owned 272 public houses, 70 per cent of which were within 20 miles of its Manchester brewery. During the 1970s the company operated within a 70-mile radius of Manchester, and growth was driven by the increasing popularity of its main product, Boddingtons Bitter. In September 2004 the owners (now known as InBev) announced plans to close the Strangeways Brewery and move most production from Manchester to Magor in South Wales and Samlesbury, Lancashire, with the loss of 60 jobs. For example, in Preston and north of same, 7 pubs were deleted from a total of 18 (39 per cent) by comparison with 37 per cent over the whole area of the GBG.

Popular Kenyan Lager since 1922, this beer is clean and refreshing with a white head, crisp and clean aromas with a touch of citrus. Boddingtons has a distinctive straw-golden coloured body with a creamy white head, which is achieved by the addition of nitrogen. General impression is that things were going well for them through the 70s (perhaps helped by some blandification? At that time over ten percent of Boddingtons production was exported to some 40 countries worldwide, including China, the United States, Taiwan and the West Indies.

From July 1991 until 1999, a series of Boddingtons advertisements created by the Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) agency used "The Cream of Manchester" tagline.Seems like they're doing better now from a commercial point of view but it's impossible to distinguish their beers from those of other breweries. Boddingtons cask ale production, which accounted for less than 10 per cent of output, was moved to Hydes Brewery in Moss Side. Manchester and the North of England were now fashionable in the public consciousness and rejuvenated from an image of industrial decay. As well as the recipe, there's a few hundred words of text describing the beer and its historical context and an image of the original brewing record.

That's chaotic - perhaps when they were messing around with recipes, or was this when they lost the yeast? Renowned for its golden colour, distinctive creamy head, smooth body and easy drinking character, Boddingtons is a medium-bodied pale ale. The first Good Beer Guide, 1974, is fairly widely acknowledged, not least by its editor, as an imperfect document. Strangeways Brewery closed in 2004 and production of pasteurised (keg and can) Boddingtons was moved to Samlesbury in Lancashire. Apparently though, there are a few other versions, now produced by AB InBev, including this draught bitter, a canned bitter with nitrogen widget trying to fabricate the creaminess of a true cask-conditioned bitter.v=1596112826","options":["Size"],"media":[{"alt":"Johnnie Walker BLUE Label 70cl","id":6698738909235,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":1.
