Judith cared for so many people and made a difference in so many lives through the course of this novel and while I found all of these minor characters and their life stories very interesting, I don't understand why author didn't give us a closer insight into Judith's soul. Terrific 40 hour saga which I just finished on audio for the second time this year (first time was in January).

He has written over 150 books, including The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Why the Whales Came, The Mozart Question, Shadow, and War Horse, which was adapted for a hugely successful stage production by the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg. Exploring, Judith had tentatively ventured beyond the bounds of the garden, so that the railway line, the neighbouring violet-farm, and the shores of the estuary became her playground. They would go to church, and then there would be roast goose for lunch, and afterwards, before it grew dark, they would take a brisk walk over the golf course, to the white gate which stood high above the sea. One of my favourite characters other than Judith was Diana Carey-Lewis, she is so glamorous and elegant and lets nothing phase her. Willis was all bound up with the mystery of Heather’s Uncle Fred who hadn’t got it in him, but whenever Judith broached the matter with her mother, she was met with pursed lips and a change of subject.

Ultimately, in this portrait of family love, the Baxters cling to each other and to God's promise of forever. The story begins in the late 1930's, and of course the reader knows right away that we will see young Judith (around 14 in the first chapter) dealing with the trauma of WWII and how it affects her life and the lives of those around her. The overcast day had slipped early into darkness and a thin drizzle fell, shimmering against glowing street lamps.

H. Smith, where Judith’s mother bought her monthly Vogue and came each Saturday to change her library book. Whilst it is Judith and the Carey-Lewis's who are central to the story, it is pleasing that not all the action is wholly centred on them. That day, the tide-race of the Channel was indigo-blue, but the ocean was turquoise, with rollers pouring in onto the empty beach. I sometimes consider myself a literary snob and was looking for something completely different to read. She always answered the questions in a vague fashion, partly because she didn’t want to discuss the matter, and partly because she didn’t know exactly how she did feel. The Baxters make plans to come together for a summer lakeside reunion, a celebration like they haven't had in years. With their generosity and kindness, Judith grows from naive girl to confident young woman, basking in the warm affection of a surrogate family whose flame burns brightly.

His latest book is Boy Giant published by Harper Collins Children’s Books and Owl or Pussycat illustrated by Polly Dunbar and published by David Fickling Books. In 1955, she also began writing under her married name Rosamunde Pilcher, by 1965 she her own name to all of her novels. Because of the proximity of the sea, it never seemed to matter how hot it got, because there was always a fresh breeze blowing in with the breakers, and indoors were wooden ceiling fans to stir the air. They are an odd assortment: The best-friend the reader cannot do without, the romantic, the family atmosphere that Judith so craves---- and in end, the excitement involved with simply putting all these characters together in one story.
