Description

For those who know Penelope Keith only as Margo or Audrey from TV, her dramatic moments in this film will be a real eye-opener.

Believing themselves unintentional killers, the two flee in Gladys's old wreck of a car, commencing a journey of comedic misunderstandings in which these two very different ladies embark on a shared voyage of self-discovery. Remake of the 1961 Disney comedy about separated identical twins who meet at camp, change places and hatch a plot to reunite their divorced parents. Marge tells her, that she hasn't actually read Bridget Jones' diary, HF replies that it's perfectly OK, as long as they all bought a copy, then leaps out the door in a wild police chase (on foot) in fast-motion accompanied by the music from Benny Hills ditto chases. Like any good drama and comedy, there are laughs along the way when they run out of money, break into a pharmacy, etc.It was subsequently repeated on ITV3 on 6 March 2016, its first repeat in the United Kingdom since its original broadcast in 2003. Instead of Texas highways, their getaway takes Margery and Gladys across the secondary B-roads of the Midlands, en route to sanctuary in (wait for it) Milton Keynes. However, with money short and Gladys needing medication, the duo is forced into a surprisingly full-blown crime spree, proving more than a match for an unlikely pair of policemen, Detective Inspector Woolley and Detective Sergeant Stringer. Britain has had a long history of mainly 'gentle' if somewhat bawdy comedies committed to celluloid.

A neglected housewife makes an unexpected friend at a nursing home, where she hears a true tale about an independent woman in 1920s Alabama, who ran the town diner, served food to people of color and protected her sister-in-law from an abusive spouse. Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Glady. A bit slapstick, a bit naughty, a bit far fetched but above all, led by protagonists that you can actually relate too.

While her cleaning lady (June Brown) is working one day, they catch a punk in the midst of robbing the house. The plot (what gets them on the move) is outright implausible, but the neighbourwatch-theme is quite good, I think. Wealthy housewife Margery and her rough-diamond cleaner, Gladys, disturb a burglar, knock him unconscious in self-protection, then panic and leave him for dead. Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Gladys' money, and giving petty crook Terry Mason a lift, they are pursued by the police.
