Description

For fans of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Halle Butler, this is a darkly funny, surprisingly tender, and weirdly charming coming-of-age novel about a young woman with so much anxiety she'd rather lie than risk hurting anyone's feelings. You may not laugh out loud at some of the humour, but there are parts where you might crack a small smile, such as when Gilda learns that the password to the church’s computer is simply the word, wait for it, “password. Maybe I have read too many books that feature aimless alienated women in their twenties but, in comparison to My Year of Rest and Relaxation, Luster, and Pretend I'm Dead, Everyone in This Room Will Someday be Dead is quite forgettable. That this was able to do so much - make me feel this much - in such a limited amount of pages is a fantastic accomplishment.

She also has an obsession with death; how people die, how she is going to die, how the planet and everyone on it will die. Every seemingly mundane action Gilda makes has to be mentioned, so that we have many lines such as these: I drink, I get up, I put the cup on the counter, I move my hand, I walk, I sit, I blink, I look down/up. Because of her death obsession, Gilda frequents the emergency room with varying diseases and symptoms that lead to death. Not the new favorite I was hoping it might be, but the ending really brought it around for me and I ended up enjoying this much more because of it. I only cry twice a year: at my annual rewatch of About Time, and when I am somehow held down or arrested and unable to prevent myself from listening to the song The Luckiest / watching an animal video / thinking too hard about a nice tweet I saw four months ago. Through a series of odd behaviors, Gilda becomes a suspect in the death of the former secretary who she never met.

Funny about death, real about anxiety, witty about the things that worry us the most, with the most endearing kind-hearted cast of characters. Being queer is not inherently depressing; however, it is tied to homophobia, which is why queer people suffer from depression and anxiety at higher rates. Austin’s writing is spare yet exciting, each page sparkles with keen observation about the fleeting nature of life, yes, but also our profound ability to make lasting impact on those around us. The priest assumes she is there for a job interview and hires her on the spot because she knows how to use the internet.

Q: The passage that reads: “I find it so bizarre that I occupy space, and that I am seen by other people.

A delightful blend of warmth, deadpan humor, and pitch-perfect observations about the human condition, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead is a crackling exploration of what it takes to stay afloat in a world where your expiration—and the expiration of those you love—is the only certainty. However, by the end of the novel I didn’t feel like I got a deeper understanding or connection with the main character. There were a few funny moments of fish-out-of-water humor as Gilda tries to understand the rules of the Catholic religion. Emily Austin's protagonist, Gilda - an atheist, animal-loving lesbian who has worried about death since childhood-spoke directly to the deepest, darkest parts of myself. I can understand the reasoning: the book is written from the perspective of someone with a fragmented mind. I would be lying if I said I loved this book but I did like Gilda as a character and I enjoyed going on her journey with her. I also didn’t mind the takedown of the Catholic Church, though it should be said that Austin doesn’t hit below the belt and say anything too barbaric.

Emily Austin is the author of EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD, INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SPACE, and GAY GIRL PRAYERS. Gilda believes that Eleanor is trying to steal her identity when they first start messaging on a dating app. I think it would be difficult to understand what it feels like to be Gilda without being subjected to her thought patterns, and it would be hard to relate to her without knowing intimately what she is thinking. While it is breezily written and is easy to read, it deals with the serious subject matter of mental illness.Gilda's overwhelming questions about the nature of existence don't go away; transformed by wonder, they turn into love instead. She can’t bear to ignore the kindly old woman, who has been trying to reach her friend through the church inbox, but she also can’t bring herself to break the bad news. Gilda is an iconic female protagonist with a unique narrative voice and worldview: through her we discover the absurdities of a life with anxiety, and take a journey through her thoughts as she scrutinizes her experiences of dating, religion, family and the perils of amateur detective work. I’m sure that this book will go far, particularly as it makes you emphasize with someone who is suffering from a severe mental illness.
