Description

An ultra-real small town enforcer, violent, sadistic, irretrievably flawed, shouldering the burden of guilt; one of us maybe, if we dare to think it, taken a wrong turn, corrupted and unflinching. Whilst we only now appreciate the film for what it brought to our screens and conscious, many things have changed in the time in between. The stellar reviews on the book cover are both correct in the influence Ted Lewis had on the rise of the British ‘noir’ genre and misleading, in their comparison with Raymond Chandler.

And you can hear soundtrack highlights from the likes of Diamonds, Fear Is The Key, The Stone Killer and The Black Windmill on Disc 3. Mike Hodges created a Brit-crime magnum opus with this unforgettably sleazy, slimy, nasty film from 1971 – now on re-release, linked to the director’s retrospective at London’s BFI Southbank. Someone killed his brother and, by golly, they're going to pay along with anyone else who gets in his way. She tells him the film was Kinnear's and that she thinks Doreen was pulled into the production by Eric. Mostly Jack is enormously pissed at the people who killed his brother and who didn't even trouble themselves enough to make the "accident" look legitimate.

He discovers that Paice produces amateur porn movies using young women drugged and raped by Eddie and Geraldine; one video shows Doreen as one of the victims. The original British quad poster with artwork by Arnaldo Putzu, in common with many film posters, has aspects or images that differ from the finished screen version. He wrote a letter to MGM when he learned it was making the film in Newcastle, and he was invited to meet director Mike Hodges, who wanted to cast local actors. Lewis really captured the time and place with his prose, the description of working class lifestyles in Britain in the 70s painted in true grim light and the attitudes are guaranteed to shock in this age of cotton wool and insane politcal correctness.

Asked in 2006, Putzu could not remember his artistic rationale for painting the floral jacket, but said he was painting a lot of flowers in designs at that time. Although he is not credited as such in the film, Caine has been acknowledged in retrospect as a co-producer.

Locations along the east coast of England had been scouted by Hodges and Klinger in the spring of 1970, to find a landscape that suggested a "hard, deprived background".

The film received an 11% favorable rating among the critics tracked by Rotten Tomatoes, based on 61 reviews, with an average rating of 3.This is an arrangement of Roy Budd's theme from the 1971 British gangster film, arranged for Wobble's Chinese Dub orchestra.
