Here to Slay is a competitive role-playing fantasy strategy card game that's all about assembling a party of Heroes and slaying monsters (and sometimes sabotaging your friends too) from the creators of Unstable Unicorns. Whether you enjoy fighters, bards, wizards, or thieves, you'll find a party leader that's right for your play style - but choose wisely, because you only get one party leader for the whole game!

The version I have is the Kickstarter Exclusive version which does have some extras you won’t get in the base game. What took me by surprise was that the Druid powers are activated by rolling a number less than the number stated on the card.As a side note, if you’re looking for a larger group game, the second expansion (Berserker and Necromancer) would allow a whopping 10 players. Some warrior cards also have the ability to hold two item cards, so you can protect your loved ones with a decoy doll, as well as adding +2 to your roll. Druid Deer protect your army, such as ‘Maegisty’ and ‘Doe Fallow’ … took me too long to figure that one out.

There’s a lot of space given to the artwork – which you can understand, given how nice it is – but it would have been nice if more attention had been paid to making the cards a little more clear to read in terms of their in-game benefits. You’ll often find that as soon as one game finishes, you’ll be straight back in for round two to get your own back on those backstabbing friends!Playing a challenge card initiates a 1V1 challenge in which you and another player both have to roll the dice. There are also magic cards and upgrade cards that are usually highly interactive, as interfering with other players is a core part of the game. There definitely aren’t as many games that include so many players successfully, so hats off to Unstable Unicorns. For example, an 8+ roll is a successful roll and a 5- is a failed roll) Kill three unique monsters, and you win the game!

The expansion recommends that you now collect 8 classes of hero, which makes it a more balanced game in our experience. Ability text on party leaders and monsters is so small that it often goes forgotten, however, which feels like a bit of a flaw.Thankfully, Here to Slay brings a bit more control to the proceedings, with the beautifully cute creatures here – rather than simply being put in play to fill a ‘stable’ – forming RPG-style parties and slaying oversized monsters.
