Although the story does have eco themes it isn’t at all heavy handed and the heist takes centre stage. This is a great story and message for children cleverly mixed together in a funny and interesting way! I think the children who do read this will definitely find something to like, and adults who are used to indulging in this genre will also enjoy their time with it.

I loved the diverse group of characters and the important message this book sends about the importance of protecting our oceans, sealife and environment and how dangerous things could be for us all if we don't do something about it now!

The book would be perfect to explore themes such as marine life, plastic pollution, littering and caring for our marine life. The sea creatures near Haven Bay are acting very strangely, attacking boats, and Alex senses some dark power is controlling them. The otters were just adorable, the thieving seagull was very amusing, and Kraken the blue octopus was just wonderful! This book has all the elements to make the perfect MG adventure - it's funny, it's got strange and familiar creatures and a brilliant cast of characters. The story itself was quite predictable and nothing really new happened that I haven't seen elsewhere.It's like writing a story but then deciding not to include the villain, or writing about WW2 but leaving out Hitler entirely and just have the Allies bringing peace.
