Description

It also, like the Six Grapes, has hints of the native Gum Cistus plant, which grows around the vineyards in the Douro, imparting very subtle aromas of mint to the wine.

A cream that is born from the fusion of the popular liquor with the traditional taste of a custard style cream cake. Cockburn's Special Reserve is a very fine wine selected for its richness and concentration, from the finest vineyards in the Upper Douro and matured in oak casks for five years. The Cockburn’s lodge has the largest collection of oak barrels and wooden vats of any Port cellar in the historical area of Vila Nova de Gaia. What there is, looks very good, with some houses declaring a vintage year for the third successive year. Cockburn's Special Reserve was originally introduced in 1969 as the first great Reserve Port and since that time its famous fruity and full-bodied quality, combined with a fine dry finish, has been the benchmark for all Reserve Ports.

Fine Ruby pairs well with blue veined cheeses, rich chocolate desserts - especially with raspberry sauce - or simply squares of dark chocolate and toasted walnuts. The unique blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão grapes gives Cockburn's Special Reserve Port its signature taste, making it a perfect addition to any dessert or cheese board. Most the grapes are picked from Cockburn’s own vineyard but a few are specially selected from neighbouring vineyards, all however are pricked from the spectacular upper Douro valley.

Quinta dos Canais is one of the major Douro estates, with a total area of 272 hectares, of which close to 100 are under vine. These multi-national companies all promoted the brand heavily and for many it is a name synonymous with Port; the mispronunciation of the name still causes amusement! Youthful tannins lend it a slight peppery spice but it’s the extra time spent in oak barrels that gives it its balance and signature velvety smoothness. But it also has the elegance of age the softness and smoothness that can only be achieved by slow ageing in old oak barrels. The Millennium vintage of 2000 was wonderfully rich and ripe, approachable in style but worth keeping. We apologise if we take a little longer in busier periods and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
