While in some cases this could be seen as a negative thing, for Unicorn and GUNSHIP in general this certainly works. My favorites right now are Tech Noir II (a more upbeat sequel to the original), Empress Of The Damned (there's a lot going on in this song and it has a lot of energy and attitude) and Ghost (the music video is absolutely hypnotizing). On top of that, pretty much from Ghost onwards, Gunship begin to cycle through their bag in tricks in even more obvious fashions, and it becomes so easy to lose interest when it’s padded to that extent. If you like the 80’s synth sound mixed in with classic sci-fi like terminator, robocop, aliens et al with a nice sprinkling of cyberpunk, chances are you will enjoy this album. Their restlessness is nothing but a benefit for us as this record is a warm welcome back and quite the treat for those of us that have been waiting for years for that neon and chrome synthwave that they are so adept at creating.

GUNSHIP’s self-titled album from 2015 has been in near constant rotation for eight years and its nostalgia-driven neon atmosphere is both warm and inviting from start to finish. Da menzionare, infine, le collaborazioni d'eccellenza, che spaziano dall'alfiere del genere Carpenter Brut allo storico batterista degli Slayer Dave Lombardo (Monster in Paradise). We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres. GUNSHIP have always seemed like an entity that could easily float into any space within the electronic music scene that they wanted to and bless their hearts they just don’t care to land in one spot.It doesn’t matter how airtight your stylistic recreations are, or how many big-name guests you can bring onboard; without the songs to keep it all steady, you’re just going to sink. The saxophone work by Tim Capello is stunning with collaboration also with the legendary John Carpenter. I mean, there isn't much else to say - if you liked some of the songs on their first two albums, then you'll definitely like some of the tracks on this one. This album has been on repeat for me for months as I could always find a song to fit my mood or change it completely. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Given the slight changes in approach between their last two records I wondered if we’d hear a shift into a new direction but instead what I felt like what was happening was a slight fusion of what their two previous LPs offered and a healthy dash of sexy was added in. Dive into fantasy and revel in imagination on this new 14 track electric thrill ride featuring special guests John Carpenter, Gavin Rossdale (Bush), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Carpenter Brut, Milkie Way (Wargasm), Tim Cappello (Lost Boys), Health, Tyler Bates (John Wick, Guardians of the Galaxy etc), Lights, Power Glove, Charlie Simpson, Britta Philips (Jem), and Stella Le Page. I’ve always considered GUNSHIP to be at the top of their class and one of the premier acts of their genre and Unicorn does nothing but prove this further. Though this isn’t an easy listen, Body Void’s newest journey into the abyss yields a shrieking, industrial mutation of doom-metal that couldn’t fit into the blackness around them more perfectly. GUNSHIP is so good at weaving their signature sound through so many stylistic lenses which range from dance tunes to industrial bangers and back again that one could easily assume that as this album bounces from song to song that this is a playlist rather than an album.Tech Noir’ finally gets a sequel too, with ‘Tech Noir 2’ bringing Charlie Simpson back to team up with his Fightstar bandmates alongside John Carpenter. They’re simply just parts of an objectively impressive array of guests, plugged into place with barely a thought given to what uniqueness they could possibly bring. It’s impossible not to bop to, a glaring, neon-drenched synth banger that’ll lodge itself firmly in your skull. And so, when he’s left to fend for himself as a singer here, there’s a distinct lack of awareness among Gunship of how prominent that weakness can be. Early in their career GUNSHIP very understandably did this, but on this album they are embracing the future in a way that they haven’t before.

It’s not even worth singling out individual tracks for the most part, either; there’s barely anything to single out! We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. As far as highlights go, Empress Of The Damned is head-and-shoulders the best song here, partly for its industrialised dance-pop throb, and partly because Lights is such an engaging vocalist that carrying a song like this requires little effort. Weaponized Love” feels like their love letter to Nine Inch Nails with its lusty lyrics and beats and “Holographic Heart” – which features Britta Phillips – is pure Madonna worship in the best way. While critical reviews are a common part of music journalism, a more balanced and objective approach would provide a fairer assessment for readers.Unfortunately, once you’re past the halfway mark, songs start to bleed into each other and it’s just too much. It’s all incredibly similar stuff all over the place, from the analogue synths to the gated percussion, to the saxophone that trails through about half-a-dozen songs here, and sounds more perfunctory every single time. If there is one complaint that I have about this record is that it is perhaps a little bit too long to be comfortably consumed in one go as things can run together a little bit, especially in the final third of the album.
