Concerned, Victor and Elizabeth visit Waldman, Henry's former professor, who explains that Henry had left the college to pursue a mad dream of recreating human life. When we weep for Kong, it is because we feel for his plight; but when we weep for the Creature, it is because we feel for ourselves. Literally kept in wraps until this moment, Karloff's rendition of the scarred creature makes us immediately forget all the cheesy knock-offs and commercial effigies of the monster's persona.

Weishaupt had modeled his group to some extent on Freemasonry, and many Illuminati chapters drew membership from existing Masonic lodges. At worst, Karloff was at least assured of steady employment for the next thirty-five years; and those of us who love horror films should be thoroughly grateful for it—even though, it must be admitted, Karloff the actor was often far, far superior to the material that he was offered. All of this, however, is the kind of thing that may not occur to the audience until after a viewing. During this time, the monster learned to speak and began to develop a sense of humanity, but this brief happiness ended when the monster decided to end his own life, as well as that of his monstrous "bride", by destroying the Frankenstein watchtower.

According to material contained in the production file for this film at the AMPAS Library, the original Carlo Collodi story was written in installments for an Italian weekly magazine. As the Shelley novel was in the public domain, Universal purchased the most recent in a century-long series of stage adaptations of Frankenstein. But we all know that Fritz has the intelligence of a …well, let's just say that Fritz wouldn't know the difference between a normal brain and the brain of Abby Normal.Comments: It was, appropriately enough, precisely nine months after the beginning of screen horror in the sound era that, amidst a blazing shower of sparks and at the height of a violent electrical storm, cinematic Mad Science was born. Many productions of the 1930s suffer from a slightly cramped feeling, due to the struggles of the cameramen of the time to conceal the limitations of the sets on which they were shot.
