The clash of culture and race -- made even more interesting as a result of our hero being a white man raised by a Mohawk clan, and all the complexities surrounding his own struggle of finding his place and identity over the years -- in addition to a village full of personalities, beliefs and greed, result in this book being quite the melting pot of adventure, thrills, and agonies.

Into the Wilderness is one of those rare stories that let you breathe the air of another time, and leave your footprints on the snow of a wild, strange place. Nathaniel is the only thoroughly admirable white male in the huge cast--upbringing having triumphed over blood--and no person of color has flaws.Under the pen name Sara Donati I am the author of the Wilderness series, six historical novels that follow the fortunes of a group of families living in upstate New York from about 1792-1825. I started this Outlandish Observations blog in August, 2008, as a central repository for news and information about Diana Gabaldon's books, including new and upcoming releases.

And the thing is, I disliked that book, so the surest way to get me to never read a book was to compare it to "Outlander. Word has reached them that Nathaniel’s father has been arrested by crown officials in British Canada. Most of the main characters had long but defined story arcs that wove a consistent thread through the series, as several of the books focused on characters from different generations. There were certain people I disliked from the start and never grew to love, some who surprised me along the way, and others I can't wait to see more of in the coming books. People were sometimes very insistent on that, and I know that Diana was sometimes irritated by the whole debate. They are well-written and despite being long-winded and sometimes far-fetched, they are usually entertaining.

Although born in the United Kingdom, she lived the first forty years of her life in Zimbabwe, where she met and married her husband, Kingsley. I'm in the minority here, obviously, but I thought the love story between Elizabeth Middleton and Nathaniel Bonner was awfully forced. There was at least one major plot hole that kept bugging me and a few predictable events but enough surprises that I never felt I was totally wasting my time. I have loved this book for years and had to be content with the printed version and a terribly abridged cassette. I’d never heard of Sara Donati before, nor had I heard of Diana Gabaldon, whose high praise on the cover conveyed much about this mystery book’s contents. When Elizabeth Middleton, twenty-nine years old and unmarried, leaves her Aunt Merriweather’s comfortable English estate to join her father and brother in the remote mountain village of Paradise on the edge of the New York wilderness, she does so with a strong will and an unwavering purpose: to teach school. In the sudden peace that follows the storm, as families struggle to rebuild, childhood friends Martha and Daniel, Lily’s twin brother, suddenly begin to see each other in a new light. INTO THE WILDERNESS by Sara Donati has been an absolute pleasure to read and a experience I won't soon forget. This is a series that has been recommended to many times but I am yet to delve into it yet – one day I hope to.
