Description

At a young age, she found herself writing funny stories or poems to friends and family for special occasions, and after high school she undertook a performing arts diploma, flourishing in her creative writing class.

Zara's an infinitely relatable character; she's funny and goofy and constantly second-guessing herself. It’s a hilarious page-turner and Sophie’s very much Scotland’s own Jackie Collins: talented, funny and gorgeous, I’m full of admiration for her, not just for this book but for achieving this success while being on the NHS front-line in the midst of the pandemic! The story was okay, but I did get a bit fed up of some of the stuff repeating throughout (why does she continually refer to her vagina as fishy? The book, though fictionalised, features Zara, a young Glaswegian health worker whose online dating adventures could have been scripted by Quentin Tarantino and Bette Midler.

And amidst all the unrefined concupiscence and gleefully abandoned foundation garments there is tenderness too and the eternal struggle of a young woman seeking reassurance and validation about her looks and experiences. A Glasgow Kiss, was released with a new book cover than Sophie’s original (the Duke of Wellington Statue- featuring the iconic Glaswegian cone) to target a larger audience down South. I loved reading about Glasgow it’s a place I love in Scotland (well all of Scotland) that isn’t covered as much in books and it’s so nostalgic for me like I was there again. I have no such disastrous love life (because I have no love life), so I had a fun time reading about someone's ups and downs in this arena. Were it better written and edited I’d have enjoyed it more but grammar issues, strange capitalisation (“walking through the Streets”), spelling mistakes (b-line instead of bee line) and justification issues (words spread across the page) really put me off.

We've all had endless supplies of dating experiences, from the weird to downright quirky and OMG epic scenarios, but like Zara, nothing beats catching up with the besties and offloading the hot gossip. And while the majority of the responses to the book have been from women, quite a few blokes responded too.

Her blog exposes bizarre, questionable and downright unforgettable dating experiences, both from Sophie and followers. I’m a nurse in Glasgow just like Zara, and I can attest that we are a colourful bunch but felt like this book went too far and I definitely shook my head like my Mother would a good few times! It was heartwarming to know I'm not the only female who checks 'read' receipts and 'last active' on WhatsApp and social media platforms. With 30 fast approaching, she’s determined to do whatever it takes to find love – or at least someone to sext!

Combined with the bold language of Glasgow’s streets, we journey inside Zara’s head revealing the truths, the drama and the heartache that goes along with dating in the twenty-first century. If you're looking for an innocent and cute love story this summer then this one is not for you haha. It’s the ultimate in low-cost, sustainable book-reading and often sparks an interest among members in other authors.
