Description

It was especially interesting to note that this phenomenon occurred regardless of the therapist's status as a student, or even his or her years of experience. Beginning with Freud's discovery of transference, Kahn traces the history of the clinical relationship from Carl Rogers' introduction of humanistic concerns through Merton Gill's theory and technique of transference analysis, to the pioneering work of Heinz Kohut, who has most successfully brought together psychoanalytic and humanistic thought. Consistent with Cronbach and Glesser, 38 therapist–client difference values were computed by using SPI modality scores corrected for elevation and scatter (D″ 2), converting them essentially to z-scores. In these analyses, it was observed that dropout could not be predicted by D 2, D′ 2, or D″ 2 statistics or by most therapist demographic data. Although disparate views have been published, the theory underlying multimodal therapy suggests that therapist–client similarity would be most advantageous for treatment outcome and client satisfaction.

That these dropout rates could not be so predicted was a surprising finding and is not easily explainable. Modality scores (corrected for elevation) are then corrected for “scatter” by dividing them by the standard deviation of the modality scores (e.Therapist–client similarity was not found to be predictive of clients' initial levels of psychopathology in analyses of intake GSI scores ( R = 0. Family and marital therapy clients were not recruited, so as to optimize concentration on the interactions between therapists and individual therapy clients. Because only 19 outcome packets were collected, it was determined that there were insufficient data for these nine separate analyses. Consequently, for optimal treatment outcome, therapy must focus on the significant manifestations in all seven modalities. And what is a treatment theory other than a template with which to make choices about technique selection?

Similarity/dissimilarity was determined on the basis of Myers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) profiles. The surprising aspect was that it was the older, more experienced therapists who were more likely to have clients leave therapy prior to the twelfth session. Steer RA, Platt JJ, Rainert WF, et al: Relationships of SCL-90 profiles to methadone patients' psychosocial characteristics and treatment response. Given the high dropout rate encountered in this study, some post hoc analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between therapist–client similarity on the SPI and dropout, as well as between several of the demographic variables and dropout. Similarity of modality structure between therapists and clients has already been demonstrated to be an important predictor of the establishment of rapport in early psychotherapy.People who score high on the Behaviors modality scale are generally described as active, energetic, and busy. I missed mentioning and describing all of the four major psychoanalytic paradigms: drive theory, ego psychology, object relations, and self psychology . In "Between Therapist and Client, " Michael Kahn explores what is perhaps the most important aspect of therapy - the therapist-client relationship. For education to be effective, the “student” must be presented with some information that is new or that is presented in a different way.
