I really enjoyed the running theme/gag of Lee being in the Psychiatrist’s chair to open and close each chapter of the book. He has performed many stand-up tours across the country, and has released two stand-up DVDs, Lee Mack Live and Lee Mack – Going Out. I like that he’s able to take a few paces back from showbiz and recognize that it isn’t how the rest of the world functions and it isn’t a world he wants to be completely consumed by. And it gives him the chance to tell some little anecdotes and truths about himself that wouldn’t really fit the narrative in the actual chapters of the book. The first was for the most darts number twos in one minute, which stood until 19 November 2020 when Ricky Evans broke the record with a total of 25.

If you are a fan of Lee Mack you will enjoy this book - telling the story of his life with honesty and humour up to the point when he became a regular face on our TV screens. This book is laugh out loud funny in places and is also truthful about the comedian’s early failures. The latter led him to a job as a stable boy with legendary trainer Ginger McCain, where he got to ride Red Rum.

He doesn’t mind showing that he’s made a lot of stupid mistakes on quite a long and rocky road to fame. It takes Lee years and roughly 2/3rd of his memoir to get into comedy, actually doing it, but it’s not like he wasn’t interested, well he was but he wasn’t. I’ve always been a huge fan of Lee Mack since I heard him on the Mighty Booch radio show to following his career up to this point.

Each chapter begins with a transcript of the author talking to a shrink (with running mental commentary of the author added in), which was weird and annoying. You get the sense that Lee Mack has a first-time-author glee, as he will sometimes purposely leave in typos because he found them amusing when coming across them in the proofread. His energy, finely crafted one-liners, and lightning quick ad-libs are second to none, and his solo tours sell out wherever he plays. Lee Gordon McKillop (born 4 August 1968) is an English stand-up comedian and actor, known by the stage name Lee Mack. I think this must come from writing for the stage because if you can get three consecutive laughs by saying the same thing in three different ways, that’s three times the laughs you would have gotten by saying it once.
