Watching from afar, Cobalt Black is annoyed to see the Fury narrowly escape the blast and fly into the stratosphere, then walks away. For 35 years, due to Events, the US and Russia have had their own superheroes - America’s sweetheart protector Cobalt, and the personification of Old Russia, Fury. It was originally developed as a screenplay, and probably could’ve been okay as a full length novel, but at this length the flashbacks took over from any kind of character development - the heroine was too boring for words, and the plot was just stupid. The Fury assumes she means Gary, aka Cobalt Gold, though Silvia indicates otherwise and starts praying as the Fury crushes her head. What follows is a period in which there is a new cold war, as the Russian’s reclaim the old ‘Soviet Union’, using their new super powered being as a super soldier to crush the enemies, combatants or not, of any country that won’t rejoin the Union.

As with all stories like this, I think it is important not to start digging too deep into various details, and just enjoy the book for what it is, a really fun, enthralling action-packed superhero story. Cassie manages to trick the Fury into inhaling as the air pressure in the lab increases, and as she ducks into a hollow satellite and seals herself inside, the pressure suddenly drops, and the Fury of Russia's lungs explode.Mostly this was just a confusing mess of flashbacks and short present-day scenes until around the 80-ish% mark when the main character finally does something. I'm a massive fan of Matthew Reilly's work because, even though it's often predictable, it delivers action I can really see in my mind.

Cobalt Blue was much older than Fury when she got superpowers, which unfortunately don’t stop aging and heart failure. At that point, Black reveals that he is not actually there, only a hologram projected by a disc, at which point he detonates all 10 warheads in the nearby hangers. If you know me at all you know how much I adore Matthew Reilly's books but oh boy, my most anticipated book of 2022 is not only Reilly's worst book (that I've read so far) but, it might also be one of my least favourite books that I've read all year. Cobalt knows that no one will be able to stop Furin after she dies, even her children since they are only half as strong as him.

Cassie, now aged 29 and working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles, watches the television broadcast as her eldest brother, Greg, aka Cobalt Green, steps forward to take on the Fury. On the other side of the coin, we see the Fury of Russia, Nikolai Furin, and see the life of a depraved psycho, who was barely contained by the military in Russia, and is now out of control, doing whatever he wants. Did the Furys' have a PR meeting where they decided murder was fine but "sex slave" instead of "whore" (or literally anything else) was more PC?
