Description

The 3rd edition of The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook provides a current and greatly expanded review of the most commonly used diets that are important in the treatment of ADHD and autism. There are recipes appropriate to specific diets as indicated by icons and descriptors with each recipe. The authors share details about just how and why each diet works, examine specialty ingredients in-depth, and provide extensive resources and references. I had to admit that I honestly wasn’t sure. I know how my physical disability and ADHD affect me in the kitchen but being someone who didn’t realise they are autistic until recently, I hadn’t really thought about how my autism impacted my ability to follow a recipe and cook a meal. Rub together the flour and the butter together to get a crumb like mixture; this can take up to 10 minutes and will be the top of your crumble. Spread it evenly on top of the fruit, covering the fruit completely. To be clear, I cannot ‘just learn’ how to do things, to the standard of those considered ‘normal’. There will always be a gap in skill attainment, and my ability to carry out tasks fluctuates. I also have the ‘spiky profile’, meaning my skill attainment is extremely uneven.

I have mentioned Katie before, but hands down Kitchen Stewardship’s cookbooksare my absolute favorite. I use them, literally, on a weekly, if not daily basis. These were the first cookbooks I got when my oldest was diagnosed with ADHD and we were making changes to our diet. As I posted online about what I had found, my inbox was stuffed with people reaching out, all who could relate. Lydia Wilkins is getting ready for the launch of her first cookbook. F eaturing recipes from over 30 autistic people, The Autism Friendly Cookbook will be released on 21 November, and Lydia shares what led her to curating her first recipe book specifically designed for autistic peopleFinally, each method is finished with ideas to expand the dish or alter it to suit your food sensory preferences. The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook makes it easy for you, step, by little step, to begin a healthier food journey. Crumble is a smell I strongly associate with my childhood. This recipe has a hands-on element, so sensory avoiders may wish to use disposable gloves. My favorite recipes in this book are the salads – tons of fruit and veggie salads that my kids will eat!! The Wild Rice Fruit salad and Pasta Supreme are favorites, as well as the every popular Waldorf Salad. The Wellness Mama Cookbook Many autistic people spoke or wrote to me about how they did not learn how to cook or prepare food because lessons were not accessible.

The fact that this is even endorsed by anyone is innately offensive, yet not surprising in a society that cares little for hidden disabilities. Chef Junior has recipes that are not only ADHD Diet friendly, but kid friendly as well. All the recipes are meant to be at a lower skill level, so are easy to prepare. That makes it easy on this working mama, too! Recipes would need to be written in the right way to be accessible, catalogued by their use of energy, the skills needed, as well as by sensory and dietary preferences.

The result was a tasty, wholesome, and comforting meal, with a warm smoky taste from the chorizo and paprika. Again, the recipe made loads, so whilst it’s a longer cook than many of the recipes, your labour is rewarded with lots of yummy leftovers.

Around the same kind of time, my mentor died suddenly. The last thing he’d ever said to me acted as something of a spark to the fuse of an idea. We’d spoken about conversations about me ghostwriting the book of someone we both knew at the time – and the excitement on that was almost child-like, immediately instructing me how to write this, who to talk to, why, and what questions to ask. The voice whispered down the phone line, from thousands of miles away. If I was to ever be offered a contract, send it to me, it said. Knowing that someone, somewhere, has faith in you is a powerful act. I never thought I’d put pen to paper as part of a long form project; that to me was what the ‘boy’s club’ of ‘proper journalists’ would do! The world would be a very boring place if we were all the same, with no difference, no creativity, no originality. It is the in-between where what makes us human begins and ends. We all have our faults and flaws, our better sides and more positive days. It may be frustrating at times to acquire new skills over time, but there is something beautiful in that. Be kind to yourself. Lydia also deftly sprinkles in some advocacy and activism into this section. There’s valuable guidance for those supporting autistic people in the kitchen and Lydia does a fantastic job at explaining some of the barriers autistic people face when it comes to cooking. For example, executive functioning impacts things like being able to sequence tasks – i.e. if you’re making fish, how do you also deal with cooking other ingredients, so that everything ends up properly cooked, warm, and on your plate? And when it came to day-to-today life and practical skills, the report suggested that things like cooking can apparently just be learnt.

Ella Woodward, blogger at deliciouslyella.com has a bunch of great cookbooks out with yummy plant based recipes. We are not vegetarian, but I always love new ideas for getting more fruit and veg into my kids. After the ingredients list comes a comprehensive method. The method starts by telling you everything you need to have chopped and prepared before you start cooking; as someone who naturally approaches cooking in this way, to not have to scour through the recipe for these prep steps is fantastic. Every dish contains a rough time duration to make, an energy level and skill level required (both of which are explained in detail in section one) and ideas for when you might make it. Next comes an equipment list which I personally think should be standard in all cookbooks! With recipes developed by kids, for kids, Chef Junior is an amazing cookbook to get your youngsters not only interested in real food, but cooking on their own, too. I’m partial to this book because one of the teen authors is Katie Kimball’s son, Paul. (Remember, she’s the author of my all time fave cookbooks?)

From there a step-by-step method follows. What I thought was excellent about the methods is nothing is assumed; everything is explained but the reader isn’t patronised at all. The recipe writers tell you not only what to do but what piece of equipment to do it with and what will happen in terms of the appearance, texture, and smell to the ingredient you are using. Of course, I had to try the food! I want to preface this by saying that l am an experienced cook, who was privileged to receive an education in food as I was growing up. I also have ADHD, so I’m what the book would describe as “sensory seeking” when it comes to food.In just a few days I put together a book proposal, not actually thinking it would be published. Now, my book, The Autism-Friendly Cookbook, will be released in November 2022. The Kid-Friendly ADHD & Autism Cookbook, 3rd Edition explains the best diets for children with food intolerances and hypersensitivities that stem from altered biochemistry and which may be causing problems in learning, behavior, development, attention, sensory responses, sleep, and digestion. The authors provide guidelines to help parents determine which diets may be helpful for their child’s specific symptoms and needs. Section two is where we get to the recipes. This section is divided into four parts: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and baking/miscellaneous. Each recipe is laid out the same way, making them clear and easy to understand throughout the book. This is the cookbook I go to for new dinner ideas….she has lots of easy, yet super nutritious meal ideas. Out favorites are the Cottage Pie Stuffed Sweet Potatoes, Sweet Potato Casserole, and the Ground Beef Vegetable Soup.
