In the UK the first four Borrowers novels were illustrated by Diana Stanley and The Borrowers Avenged was illustrated by Pauline Baynes. In the U.S. all five novels were illustrated by Joe and Beth Krush. They have also been illustrated by Ilon Wikland. The Borrowers: a 1992 BBC TV series and its 1993 sequel The Return of the Borrowers, both starring Ian Holm and Penelope Wilton.

I LOVED this movie as a kid. I don't remember a thing about the story. But here it is! I got this from an online store that specializes in vintage books. She warned that it was rife with racism and parents should be cautious. This it not your father's world, after all. I'm admittedly biased in this review. It's another case where I saw the movie first, and while the book is enjoyable enough, I do think Disney showed good instincts in adapting it into something even better. The setup, eliminating the kids' family, certainly streamlines things, and avoiding the narrative difficulties raised by time travel was not only wise, but resulted in a much more creative and interesting love interest for Miss Price. And while neither really offers a good explanation for not using magic in the war effort (or in the case of the movie, continuing to do so), the movie takes advantage of the idea -- and against Nazis, so.

Angela Lansbury as Miss Eglantine Price. Miss Price is initially a somewhat reclusive woman, reluctant to take in children from London as she believes they will get in the way of her witchcraft, which she prefers to keep secret but hopes to use to bring the nascent World War II to an end. However, she bonds with the children and falls in love with Mr. Browne during their journey. She becomes the adoptive mother to the Rawlins siblings at the end of the film. For the Naboombu soccer sequence, the sodium vapor process was used, which was developed by Petro Vlahos in the 1960s. [18] Animator and director Ward Kimball served as the animation director over the sequence. [19] Directing animator Milt Kahl had designed the characters, but he was angered over the inconsistencies in the character animation. This prompted Kimball to send a memo dated on September 17, 1970, to adhere to animation cohesiveness to the animation staff. [20] Because of the heavy special effects, the entire film had to be storyboarded in advance, shot for shot, which Lansbury later said resulted in her acting being "very by the numbers". After the street market closes for the night, Swinburne takes the entire group, including the magical bed, to see him, who is revealed to possess the other half of the book. He and Miss Price exchange their halves, but the completed text only says the spell is inscribed on a medallion known as the Star of Astoroth. The Bookman tells them that, during Astoroth's life, he used his magic to imbue animals with anthropomorphism, or give them human qualities. However, they rebelled against him, killed him, stole many of his magical possessions, and traveled to an unknown island. When the Bookman names it, Paul realizes it's the one described in a children's book he took from Professor Browne's house. He asks Paul to give it to him but he refuses, which prompts a tense standoff.Kelly Rowles (5 November 2010). "Philly's Arden Theatre Brings The Borrowers to the Stage this December!". CultureMob. Tessie O'Shea as Mrs. Jessica "Jessie" Hobday, the local postmistress of Pepperinge Eye and chairman of the War Activities Committee. Stirling, Richard (2009). Julie Andrews: An Intimate Biography. St. Martin's Press. p.240. ISBN 978-0312564988.

The Complete Borrowers Stories (1983) — omnibus, excluding Poor Stainless, issued with an introduction by the author Okay, what? I have no memory of reading this in 2017! It was all new to me. Hello, depression brain! Ah well. I was just going through this, trying to find any thread of the story I loved in the movie as a kid, and hahaha nope. It's a totally different story. But that's okay! It is kind of more than I would expect from a chapter book, in terms of the danger the kids get into (burning at the stake?!?) and some other things, but in terms of the story overall, I thought it came together really well at the end. I liked little obstinate Paul, and I liked Carey (and especially that even though she was the oldest, and a girl, she wasn't BOSSY!), and I even liked quiet Charles. I thought Miss Price was an interesting character, though yes, more interesting as a witch than later on. But Eumelius? Or however you spell that - he had all the personality of a wet noodle. Ah well. There's no accounting for tastes, I guess.Roy Snart as Paul Rawlins. Paul is about six; his possession of the bedknob and the Isle of Naboombu children's book lead to the group's adventures as well as the eventual solution to the quest for the Substitutiary Locomotion spell. Paul is prone to blurting out whatever is on his mind, which occasionally leads to trouble. Filming took place at the Disney studios in Burbank, California, from early March to June 10, 1970. [16] The coastal scenes featuring German soldiers were shot on location at a nearby California beach. Additional scenes were shot on location in Corfe Castle in Dorset, England. [14] Filming lasted fifty-seven days while the animation and special effects required five months each to complete. [17] The Bread and Butter Stories (1998) - collection of short stories for adults, written for magazines I do not think that this would be one that I would be reading to my children (or grandchildren, as the case now is) before bedtime. It just had too many unanswerable questions, and too many things that would need explaining. I did like the time travel aspect, in the case where they could go to the place where the house had been in the present day, and it wasn't a huge giant condo building! (okay, I'm getting tired of condos in cornfields, can you tell?)

It's nice that Miss Price has witchcraft, since she hasn't much else. Her's is a genteel poverty which leaves her plenty of time to do Red Cross work, unspecified. It saddens me to observe that her use of magic makes her a suitable partner for the charlatan, who has a small farm and some gold saved.
