Description

This is everything I’ll be using in this guide. I’ll call out specific brands and paint codes as I use them. The standout feature of this brush is its paint-holding capacity. It’s surprisingly high, allowing for fewer dips and longer strokes, saving you precious time on your painting projects. You’ll want to start by opening a window, or working somewhere with decent ventilation. Enamel fumes are really unpleasant and if you’re doing this for an extended period please make sure you take the appropriate precautions! The Shurglides come in a set of five, including a 1in, two 1.5in and two 2in brushes. Each brush has chunky, soft-grip handles that are comfortable to paint with for long periods and feel nicely balanced in the hand.

Another reason I have a soft spot for the Wooster Gold Edge is its durability. I’ve found that these brushes are real workhorses that stand up to daily use throughout the year. I tend to use pretty cheap brushes for my panel lining, replacing them as the solvents destroy the brushes. I’m sure it’d be easier with nicer brushes but using oils, thinners and enamels really shortens the life of a paint brush. For panel lining a size one or two watercolour or acrylic-style brush will have enough of a belly to hold a reasonable amount. When it comes to durability, The Purdy XL Elite is top-notch. Unlike others I’ve used in the past (Hamilton Perfection, for instance), the Purdy XL Elite manages to hold its shape and integrity even after extensive use and washing. It’s soft, holds a fair amount of paint, and can handle any water-based finish. A worthy addition to any toolkit, this one. 5. Axus Onyx Cutter BrushThe Axus Décor 1.5in Precision Angled Cutter Brush has been designed with this specific task in mind. Featuring a blend of synthetic filaments, tapered for releasing paint evenly onto the surface, the angled taper of the brush is what makes it ideal for finer detail, keeping the paint on the wall where it belongs and not making a mess of anything it shouldn’t. While gloss varnish isn’t required to use the Gundam Markers, for consistencies sake one of the models in this example has had a gloss coat applied. For about three months, I used these brushes solely for emulsioning and found them to hold up beautifully. After this, I used them with gloss and eggshell finishes and was delighted to see that they delivered a perfect finish each time. In terms of price, the Ice Fusion brushes are half the cost of some of their competitors, like Purdy, and they deliver just as superior a performance. They work well with all kinds of paint and are particularly effective in delivering smooth finishes with oils. Control: Due to the shape and size of the sash brush, it allows for better control of the amount of paint applied to a surface. This can help prevent drips or runs.

After that, on subsequent outings, moisten the bristles with thinner, and remove any excess. This will prime the brush for the paint to come.

Unlike Greg, I don’t have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Gundam universe. I’d try to claim my brain is full of more useful things, but this would be a barefaced lie. I got in to the hobby because I kept seeing cool robots, and after buying a kit for a friend’s birthday I finally broke and had to have one of my own. Be sure to wash right down to the base of the brush so you clear all the paint, then simply dry with a clean rag or towel and hang it up to dry. Any storage tips to keep my paint brushes in good condition?

However, be warned: always wash these brushes with cold water. Hot water can weaken the glue holding the bristles in place. If you do this, the Wooster Gold Edge brush is truly an exceptional tool, offering a blend of precision, durability, and a comfortable grip. 4. Arroworthy FinultraWhen it comes to cutting in, this brush has unrivaled finesse. The bristles, while requiring a brief breaking-in period, are masterfully designed to go exactly where you need them to. The accuracy they provide for clean, straight lines is hard to match. With a brush like the Purdy XL Elite, even the most intricate edges become less intimidating. A sash cutter brush, often referred to simply as a "sash brush," is a type of paintbrush that has a slanted or angled bristle tip. The design of this brush allows for more precision, making it particularly useful for cutting in or edging work when painting. Here's what a sash cutter brush is typically used for in wall painting: Absolutely. As all manner of debris and dust could have built up between the bristles during transport or storage in a shop, you’re going to want to give it a good wash and comb first.

With that being said, it does have some downsides. For example, the Finultra can go a bit stiff after a while, even if you’re really careful with it. But for its price and how well it cuts in, it’s not the end of the world. When it comes to cutting in above skirting boards, the Finultra is one of the best brushes for the job as it leaves such a neat finish. I’ve honestly been so impressed that I’m planning to get a few more. Alternatively, you can prime one of the higher flow chisel tip markers and rely on the capillary action of the panel line to pull paint into it. By gently touching the marker to the panel line you can fill, and then clean up as before. Before I rattle off everything I’m using in this guide, I’m going to list what I feel is the absolute minimum you’d want, to get your kit panel-lined and water slide decals applied. As mentioned above, I usually go for Purdys, but the Axus Onyx is a solid alternative, especially considering it’s a bit lighter on the wallet.

In this guide I’m going to be covering my approach to adding some extra flavour and detail to your Gunpla kit. I got my start with an MG Barbatos, which is a phenomenal build, but at this point it’s still clean. Barbatos won’t be the only kit I’ll be using in this guide, as I’ll also be covering techniques for colour correction and custom paint jobs. If you’re like me and video tutorials aren’t really your thing, then hopefully I can give you some insight in to my approach. And I’d like to reiterate here, this is just my approach. There’s a huge variety of ways and tools to add extra detail to your Gunpla kit based on what you have available. Tools I’ve used it a few times with emulsion and it’s done a sound job every time. It holds a good bit of paint, cuts in neat, and leaves no brush marks to complain about. The bristles have a nice stiffness to them, so if you don’t get along with cutting in brushes that are too soft, this one could be right up your street. The bristles strike an ideal balance between soft and firm, contributing to a beautiful finish. The handle is comfortable, and designed for prolonged use without causing hand fatigue.
