Description

Yes, splash guards on gutters work to prevent water from overshooting your gutters. However, other gutter modifications might be needed. You might need to upgrade from 5-inch to 8-inch gutters, or you might need to put in a gutter guard. Can I install gutter splash guards myself? Think about what you’re trying to achieve by installing gutter guards before buying. For example, if your home is surrounded by lots of tree cover, it’s likely you’ll do best to buy aluminium covering or a hedgehog brush as these will be the best for avoiding leaf build up. Likewise, if your roof is particularly prone to shingle sediment, only aluminium covering is going to help protect your gutters. Undoubtedly the cheapest and lowest maintenance way to give your gutters a little bit of protection is by installing a few down pipe covers. Whilst these won’t work as well as actual gutter guards, they’re better to have than nothing at all.

After safely climbing to the height of your gutters using a ladder, align your splash guard so that the lip is facing outwards towards you. Depending on the design of your guard, you may want to fit the lip on the inside. Align and drill holes through both the lip and into the gutter at the point at which your guttering requires overflow prevention. 3. Attach & Fix In terms of durability, you can expect to get plenty of use out of these guards as they’re coated with UV-resistant polyethylene. The clips are also fairly sturdy so you shouldn’t expect to have them come out of place. We should note however that if your roof tiles hang over your guttering too far, the method of simply rolling this guard into place will be severely hampered and thus we would recommend using a gutter brush or LeafTek instead. When considering effectiveness, value for money, versatility and ease of installation, it’s hard to look past Easy Innovations’ Hedgehog Brush as the best gutter guards overall.

On the Hunt for Guttering?

The signs of frequent overflows aren’t always obvious. If you can safely step outside during a rainstorm, observe how your system performs during heavy rainfall. Take note of any spots where you notice water overshooting or overflowing your gutters—that’s where you should install splash guards. You can likely install gutter splash guards yourself. Installing gutter splash guards is an easy DIY project for most homeowners. However, if you’re uncomfortable working on a ladder, we recommend hiring a professional gutter company to install your gutter splash guards. Where do gutter splash guards go? Firstly, these gutter guards have been crafted to attach to the top of your gutters by using screws and magnetic nut setters. Once installed, your gutters will be completely and securely sealed off. This means debris, leaves, twigs or seeds will all be stopped from entering and clogging your guttering – saving you on expensive repairs. So what happens to anything that lands on the gutter guard? It simply blows away with a light breeze allowing you to clean up from the ground instead.

Once installed, this mesh gutter guard is a capable protector against anything from larger insects to leaves. Like LeafTek, it also has the benefit of making sure you don’t get any birds using your gutters for nesting which consequently makes cleaning them a nightmare. Finally, the gutter guards are made from heavy-gauge aluminium topped with extremely durable baked enamel which means they’re virtually guaranteed not to deteriorate or rust. You can expect to get at least 35 years of service out of them which will save you thousands in cleaning costs. When it comes to the functionality of your guttering, pitch and tilt make an enormous difference. If your gutters are titled away from your property, this could be causing overflow, especially in very wet weather. The same is true if the pitch of the guttering is angled too steeply towards a downspout. Similarly, if the pitch is not steep enough, the water will gather in one spot instead of flowing safely to an exit as it should. As you prepare to attach your splash guard, you'll want to align it so that the lip that will be attached to the gutter will be facing outwards towards you. If you have a homemade splash guard, you may prefer that the lip be on the inside — this is really up to you and won't affect the way it works.
