Contrast is often effected when shooting into the sun, especially when wide-open!! Here is how the sel35f18 fairs in these really harsh conditions using raw quality. Note the lens flare towards the bottom of the image. Sony E-Mount 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens – Into the Sun @ f/1.8 – Raw This Sony 35mm f/1.8 is all plastic on the inside, with a plastic filter ring but a metal mount and aluminum outer skin and manual focus ring. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on your screen, then the complete image printed at this same high magnification would be about 20 × 30" (50 × 75cm).

Extra-Low Dispersion glass and two aspherical lens elements minimise distortion and improve image quality. The stabilization makes the E 35mm a better option for photography in dim light. Of course, you'll have to make sure that you're working with a cooperative subject—candid portraits are out at long shutter speeds. If you really dig shooting in dim light, don't forget about the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary, which captures more light and costs less, although it's a bit larger. Good Wide Open, Outstanding Stopped Down Falloff is invisible with the camera's default correction ON (usually at MENU > Camera 1 > Lens Comp. > Shading Comp. > Auto). This next scene was taken just down the road from where we live and you may recall it from the Nex-5r review 😉 It’s a nice mural painted on an old wall with lots of detail for visual interest. I wanted to show off the depth of field offered by the large APS-C sensor of the Sony APS-C mirrorless cameras and the fast f/1.8 aperture of the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens. Sony Nex-5r w/ sel35f18 Lens @ f/5.6, 1/60sec, ISO 200, Handheld, slight vignette added Built-in image stabilisation - Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation and a large F1.8 aperture enhance handheld shooting in fading light or dimly lit interiors

I shot raw quality using the Sony Nex-5r and Nex-6 for most of these photos unless otherwise noted. I also did not use any lens correction methods in Lightroom 4 to fix fringing or anything else on the test photos and 100% crops. An ideal second lens, the SEL35F18 prime lens can handle anything from evening shots (thanks to the bright maximum aperture) to beautifully defocused portraits. This Sony 35mm f/1.8 is a superlight and compact fast normal lens for Sony's E-mount APS-C cameras. Results are just a little bit better at f/2 (1,966). Edges are on the soft side at both f/1.8 and f/2, hovering around 1,600 lines, though the shallow depth of field will make them irrelevant for most images. But if you're shooting a landscape or other scene where everything is at distance, use a narrower f-stop if there's enough light to do so. Instead of a standard polygon-shaped lens aperture, this lens features a 7-blade circular aperture for more natural, rounded defocusing or ‘bokeh’.For landscapes and other shots where you're more concerned about ultimate resolution than shallow depth of field, we recommend working at f/4 (3,143 lines), f/5.6 (3,309 lines), or f/11 (2,974 lines). Diffraction reduces image quality at the narrowest settings—2,430 lines at f/16 and 1,384 lines at f/22. When used on APS-C, it sees the same angle of view as a 50mm lens sees when used on a full-frame camera. A versatile, multi-purpose lens - with a focal length of 52.5mm (35mm equivalency) and F1.8 aperture, it’s good for snapshots, portraits, night shots and more
