Description

Based on our analysis, the LG 34" 34GN850-B and LG 34" 34GP83A-B monitors both have a 98% DCI-P3 color gamut, which we found was excellent for gaming. The Odyssey G5 has one HDMI and one DisplayPort for connectivity, so you’ll have no problem hooking up your PC. The display can be tilted, but its stand isn’t height adjustable with is a little disappointing considering how premium the actual screen is.

In the minority of games that support 10-bit color depth, you can drop the refresh rate to 144Hz, but for the most part, we recommend going with 160Hz and 8-bit color depth. The LG 34GP83A has a very low input lag of ~4ms, which makes for imperceptible delay between your commands and the result on the screen. The Gigabyte M34WQ has an excellent response time at the max refresh rate, resulting in very little blur behind fast-moving objects. Like most monitors, you can adjust the level of pixel overdrive, but the 'Picture Quality' Overdrive setting delivers the best results overall. The 'Balance' setting is very similar, with a slightly faster rise/fall time but more noticeable overshoot. If you prefer a bit of inverse ghosting over a blur trail, it's a good alternative. The 'Speed' setting is slightly faster than 'Balance' but also introduces significant overshoot in most transitions, so it's not a good choice. FreeSync is supported over both HDMI (48-85Hz) and DisplayPort (48-160Hz), but for the G-SYNC Compatible mode, you’ll need to use DisplayPort and have a compatible GPU (GTX 10-series or newer). Replaced the LG 38WN95C-W with the LG 40WP95C-W and renamed it to the 'Best Ultrawide Monitor For Work' to be consistent with how people are looking for ultrawide monitors; moved the Dell S3422DWG to Notable Mentions because the Gigabyte M34WQ offers better value for a similar price. In our years of working with monitors, we've observed that a monitor's refresh rate is a critical factor in determining its overall performance. Refresh rate refers to the number of times the display updates the picture being displayed per second. A higher refresh rate means the screen is updated more frequently, resulting in a smoother, more fluid motion and less motion blur. Added the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9/G95SC S49CG95 as the 'Best Super Ultrawide Gaming Monitor'; added the MSI MEG 342C QD-OLED and the Corsair XENEON FLEX 45WQHD240 to Notable Mentions. Then again, VA monitors have disadvantages of their own such as significantly slower pixel response time speed, and they don’t have as wide viewing angles nor as consistent colors.inch Ultrawide screens aren’t the sharpest, but they are great for productivity and immersive gaming. You get more horizontal space and just the right amount of pixel density to make games and movies look detailed and crisp. Take note that you are going to need a meaty GPU to meet the 160Hz refresh rate, especially on modern titles. At the time of this writing, it’s the only 3440×1440 ultrawide gaming monitor with official certification. In addition, the screen has a matte anti-glare coating, which eliminates reflections, but doesn’t make the picture appear too grainy while the steep 1900R curvature adds to the overall immersion. The best monitor we've tested with an ultrawide screen is the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9/G95NA S49AG95, which is versatile for different uses. It's considered a super ultrawide monitor because it has a 49-inch screen and a 32:9 aspect ratio, equivalent to placing two 27-inch monitors side-by-side. This provides a lot of screen space for multitasking, and it has an aggressive 1000R curve that brings the edges of the screen closer to you. Still, it may take some time to get used to, especially if you aren't used to curved screens.

Lastly, the LG 34GP83A display supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), but for a notable improvement in HDR picture quality, a monitor would need a much higher brightness and contrast. It has two USB-C ports that each support Thunderbolt 4 and 96W of power delivery, which means you can easily connect a laptop to display an image from it and charge it simultaneously. While it has decent peak brightness if you want to use it in a room with a few lights around, it doesn't get very bright. If that's important to you, the LG 38WN95C-W is another option that gets brighter but has a lower resolution and worse text clarity. Based on LG’s Nano IPS panel, the LG 34GP83A delivers incredibly vibrant and punchy colors covering 98% of the DCI-P3 color space (equivalent to ~135% sRGB). Response times for the LG 34GP83A-B are excellent overall when you are playing at its maximum 160Hz refresh rate. There is no need to use its Overdrive feature beyond its Normal setting since it is practically blur-free. Be wary of setting the latter too high since it will induce unnecessary overshoot with no noticeable improvement to the monitor’s already excellent motion handling. This display’s key feature is a peak refresh rate of 165Hz, which is the highest speed you’ll find in this guide. It supports HDR (high dynamic range), which guarantees you’ll see vibrant colors, and is compatible with AMD’s FreeSync Premium technology. Oddly, this monitor isn’t compatible with Nvidia’s G-Sync, which is its only real downside when it comes to gaming performance.

What Are The Best Ultrawide Monitors?

If you plan on hooking up a laptop to your ultrawide external display, Philips’ 343E2E should be the fist external monitor you consider. Since both – the difference between 8-bit color and 10-bit color – and the difference between 144Hz and 160Hz is not all that noticeable in games, this isn’t really worth stressing over. Restructured article to reflect how people are looking for ultrawide monitors; removed the 'Best Gaming' and 'Best Super Ultrawide' categories because it doesn't fit into the scope of the article; added the Dell S3422DWG and replaced the Gigabyte M34WQ with the HP OMEN 34c because the Gigabyte is becoming hard to find; updated Notable Mentions based on changes. Most ultrawide displays have a 34-inch screen size, but there are larger ones up to 49 inches, which are known as super ultrawide monitors. On top of that, these displaystend to have curved screens to bring the edges closer toyou. When looking for an ultrawide monitor, it's important to consider what you need it for and your budget, as there are options available at different price points.

However, screen size also plays a role in the gaming experience. A bigger screen allows you to see more detail at a more comfortable size. While a high resolution is important for detail and crispness, a bigger screen allows you to see that detail at a more comfortable size. For example, a 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 1440p (3440 x 1440) will let you see a lot more detail than a 1080p (1920 x 1080) monitor of the same size. The numbers in the resolution stand for the number of pixels per line. So a 1920 x 1080 resolution monitor would have over 2 million pixels total. Based on our analysis, the LG 34" 34GN850-B and LG 34" 34GP83A-B monitors both have a resolution of 3440 x 1440, which we found was excellent for gaming. Ultrawide monitorshave an aspect ratio of either 21:9 or 32:9, providing more horizontal screen space than traditional monitors. These are great if you like opening multiple windows simultaneously. While many ultrawide monitors are designed with gaming in mind, they also offer good office performance, meaning they're great if you need something for work and play. There are also models designed with productivity in mind, as these tend to have higher resolutions and some additional features. What helps this display stand out is its ports. In additional to the typical HDMI and DisplayPort, the Philips 343E2E has a USB-C PD port. If your laptop is connected to this port with a USB-C cable, the display will provide power up to 65W, which means your laptop will be charged while it’s connected to the monitor. This is extremely convenient, and means you won’t have to use two outlets to charge your computer and use this display. Next, the monitor supports 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which means you’ll get extremely accurate color reproduction when editing photos and videos. It’s important to have this level of fidelity because you won’t have to worry about your media looking washed out or over-saturated when it’s printed or viewed on a different display.Having a high refresh rate display is essential if you want to play fast-paced games like first person shooters competitively online. Samsung’s Odyssey G5 is an excellent choice if you’re looking to upgrade to an ultrawide monitor as part of a gaming setup. The LG 34GP83A-B is compatible with both FreeSync and G-Sync for both AMD and Nvidia GPUs. It is always nice to have the freedom to choose between the two brands since both are pumping out strong contenders in the high-end GPU market. Input lag sits at 4ms at the maximum refresh rate, so there is no need to worry about delays while gaming. Thoughts on the LG 34GP83A-B We've tried different monitor resolutions and observed that a higher resolution provides a sharper and more detailed picture, resulting in a better overall gaming experience. A higher resolution means that the games will look more detailed, and you'll be able to see everything more clearly, including text quality, texture quality, aliasing (jagged edges), and HUD elements. The monitor has a peak brightness of 400-nits, which means it can get more than bright enough even in well-lit rooms while the static contrast ratio amounts to 1,000:1. You will find all the standard image settings as well as some advanced adjustment tools such as color temperature fine-tuning (in 500K increments), four gamma presets and 6-axis hue/saturation.
