Description

National Geographic Society (U.S.). (2012). Animal encyclopedia: 2,500 animals with photos, maps, and more!. Washington, D.C: National Geographic. This must-have encyclopedia for all animal lovers also includes an extensive listing of animal species with basic facts and figures, and a comprehensive glossary and index. Perfect for reading for fun or researching for school, or for use in the classroom, this second edition provides an excellent overview of the diversity of animals that live on this planet and why each one isunique.

Even the night sky around the Earth, known as the celestial sphere, has been mapped onto a globe. Celestial globes represent stars and planets visible above certain parts of the Earth. Many constellations, such as the Big Dipper, are outlined into familiar shapes on celestial globes. Looking for patterns on celestial globes makes finding individual stars easier to spot. In the 1800s, a trip to hunt “ big game” (large animals such as elephants or lions) was called a safari. While some game reserves allow traditional huntingsafaris today, others limit visitors to a “photo safari,” where visitors can shoot photographs, not animals. Classifying a species as endangered has to do with its range and habitat, as well as its actual population. For this reason, a species can be of least concern in one area and endangered in another. The gray whale, for instance, has a healthy population in the eastern Pacific Ocean, along the coast of North and South America. The population in the western Pacific, however, is critically endangered. Biologists, anthropologists, meteorologists, and other scientists have developed complex ways to determine a species’ probability of extinction. These formulas calculate the chances a species can survive, without human protection, in the wild.Threatened categories have different thresholds for these criteria. As the population and range of the species decreases, the species becomes more threatened. Population restriction is a combination of population and area of occupancy. A species is vulnerable if it is restricted to less than 1,000 mature individuals or an area of occupancy of less than 20 square kilometers (8 square miles). Accessibility/Diversity: Many students will be engaged with the color photographs, while students at a third grade reading level will find the text appropriate. Animals from around the world are included in this book, and may offer students a look at many animals they would not have the opportunity to see in real life.

Relation to other works: This book would complement other animal reference books, which are popular among students. This book would also compliment 7th grade science standards with its emphasis on plant and animal life. Like most early terrestrial globes, most early celestial globes were made of metal. Metalglobes are usually cast in two halves, or hemispheres. These halves are then welded together with hot metal, creating a seam, or raised line, in the middle of the sphere. It is nearly impossible to create seamlessglobes—globes that are made of a single piece of metal. Nevertheless, astronomers and metalsmiths in what is today India and Pakistan created such celestial globes in the 1500s. The Tahiti reed-warbler is also endangered because of human activity. The tropical weed Miconia is a non-native species that has taken over much of Tahiti’s native vegetation. The reed-warbler lives almost exclusively in Tahiti’s bamboo forests. The bird nests in bamboo and feeds on flowers and insects that live there. As development and invasive species such as Miconia destroy the bamboo forests, the population of Tahiti reed-warblers continues to shrink.Content/ Scope: This book contains over 2,500 different animals with images and maps to show students location of the animals. It also has facts about each animals they display. This is one of the most comprehensive animal encyclopedias for students today. Containing everything a student would need to get started on their research of an animal.

Accuracy/ Authority/ Bias: National Geographic is a well-known and well respected publisher. They are also known for their work with animals and wild life from their National Geographic Magazine. Arrangement/Presentation: Animals included in the work are organized by taxonomy, and each offering includes common and scientific names. Pertinent facts are also included. Sections are color-coded, and a glossary, index, and a “find out more” section add to the volume’s usefulness. The goal of many captive breeding programs at zoos is the re-introduction of animals into the wild. The California condor, a very large bird native to the west coast of the United States, has been re-introduced to its native habitat after breeding in zoos and wildlife parks. There are several breeding pairs of California condors in the wild today.

A critically endangered species’ extent of occurrence is less than 100 square kilometers (39 square miles). A critically endangered species’ area of occupancy is estimated to be less than 10 square kilometers (4 square miles). A species is vulnerable if its population has declined at least 50 percent and the cause of the decline is known. Habitat loss is the leading known cause of population decline.
