Description

The front end supports dozens of different systems with the emulators preinstalled. That list is overly optimistic for the Cortex-A75/A55 (one core for the former, three cores for the latter) CPU and PowerVR GE8300 GPU, though. You can load GameCube and PlayStation 2 disc images on the device, and run them on the preinstalled Dolphin for Handheld and AetherSX2 emulators, but I wouldn’t recommend it (F-Zero GX ran at 5 frames per second in our tests). If you want Dolphin to work well, you should reach for the G Cloud. We’ve seen ANBERNIC do this time and time again, and it’s why I only speak highly of a few of their handhelds because i don’t want you to fall into that trap of buying them every couple of months. As with all Android based handhelds we run a series of system benchmarks to see their general performance and we can also use the results to compare to other handhelds. But to see GoRetroid start this strategy scares me a little, because I genuinely thought they were better than that, but i was wrong.

Whether you are using the Retroid Launcher or AOSP Launcher you will need to set up the RetroArch app. RetroArch is an all-in-one frontend and emulator system (known as cores) that makes it very easy to play many classic computers and consoles. The 4.7-inch LCD has a 1,334-by-750 resolution that's slightly higher than on the Switch and Switch Lite, so it looks a bit sharper with its smaller area. The screen gets extremely bright, and I found that setting it to just 60% brightness made it more than visible in most lighting. It shows well-saturated color, but it doesn’t get as deep or vivid as the OLED Switch’s screen. Now, how does this compare with the other Retro Gaming Devices on the market? For starters, we have the PowKiddy X18S that shares the same SoC, a device that was not well received by the community due to the poor User Experience related to the Operating System. Other Home Consoles: Panasonic 3DO, Colecovision, PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16), PC Engine CD (TurboGrafx-CD), Vectrex! Home Computers: Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Intellivision, MSX, PC (DOSBOX), ScummVM, ZX Spectrum!Anything short of sixth-generation consoles plays just fine, at least. Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, NES, Nintendo 64, Super NES, Sony PlayStation, and Turbografx-16 games all run smoothly and with nicely sharp, upscaled graphics. Even most PlayStation Portable games play well, though the most advanced games, such as God of War: Chains of Olympus and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, stutter a bit. The screen is fantastic, too, making each game pop with vibrant colors. Buying one of these will entice not only GoRetroid but other manufacturers to use this scammy marketing tactic moving forward. Nintendo: NES, SNES, Nintendo64, GameCube, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, Virtual Boy, Game and Watch! We have prepared a guide on how to set up RetroArch which is required for use with Retroid Launcher, or as an individual app. Learn how to setup RetroArch in our article here and embedded below. Setting up and using the Retroid Launcher

So this review is going to be a little different, I have spoken about my concerns here, and i hope you take them into consideration, but i do want to review this handheld as is, because it’s a great device and let’s face it, we are all adults here, you can spend your money on what you want, but i just had to start the article off with my opinions on their marketing strategy and advise that you don’t buy it because it seems they genuinely don’t give a toss about their customers. There is also a built-in screen mapper to map the controls to Android games that do not natively support controllers! The easy-to-use screen mapper simply requires drag and drop icons to on-screen button areas to configure. You can gain the upper hand on first person shooters against those still playing on awkward on-screen controls! The setup wizard will finish off any other tasks and you will be launched into the Launcher you chose. Adding games to your micro SD cardThe 4.7-inch touchscreen display, offering a clear resolution of 750x1334@60fps and 450nits brightness, ensures every pixel of your classic games shines through. Running on Android 11, this retro gaming console provides a user-friendly interface and robust performance.
