But Monsieur Lutens doesn't make it that easy for us. In between there are more and more dry to dusty notes, possibly coming from oregano. At least I can see in my mind's eye these rather dry leaves as they are sprinkled over the hot pizza from the oven. But in addition I see a small cloud of wood dust ... Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan is marketed as a unisex perfume, and I wholeheartedly agree with this choice. Mature scent DNA, but also wearable for anyone younger than 30 with an acquired taste. Fast forward about seven years later, and the art of perfume making caught my attention after purchasing a few bottles of essential oil to diffuse. I continued pretty consistently but have never taken to another level, due to fear and anxiety of the sheer dedication and amount of money that must be invested to start a fragrance line and a small business in general (I am feeling more and more confident as of late, stay tuned). This has led, however, to much deeper appreciation for fragrance and scent, studying hundreds of natural materials and aromachems, learning from mentors in the fragrance community, collecting and educating myself through fragrance composition books, studying the history of perfume, and then came 2020. I also do not have to; Solstice left me such a generous filling that I can still revel for a long time in this world apart from everyday life. In ideal conditions, I could smell this one even after showering, and the next day. Don’t overspray, and keep the number of applications to a lower level since the initial projection, and sillage can get the wrong kind of attention from your coworkers or new people you meet.

The well-known story of Serge Lutens finding a wooden box containing amber wax in Marrakech starts to unfold here. The only mentioned woody note in the fragrance is sandalwood, but it ain’t that.Contrary to that, I believe that almost everything from the brand’s selection provides something for everyone, and is usually considered a benchmark fragrance house. It fascinates me by an all-embracing rounded smell picture and no single corner, edge or note disturbs me also only a short moment long. More complex, but just as wearable and perhaps my favorite amber, is Histoires de Parfums Ambre 114. With a spicy opening of nutmeg, warm sandalwood soon follows with the addition of patchouli and vetiver. Although the fragrance isn’t sweet, I do get some floral rose and geranium in the drydown. It is so well blended and balanced, the varied notes swirl around you like the first warm breeze in spring after a hard winter. King of the hill must certainly be Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan. It opens big, with a large throw of balsamic amber tempered with herbs and spices. Coriander, bay leaf, and oregano lead in the slightly astringent opening, but the drydown is a pure syrupy powder delight. This one requires the right frame of mind, as it is not an everyday sort of fragrance, and commitment, as it easily lasts all day. Ambre Sultan has two kinds of flankers which are the oily version Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan Confit de Parfum which provides a more intimate experience, and the Zellige Limited Edition which was released in 2020.

Take your senses on a journey with the Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan Eau de Parfum. Wander through the streets of Marrakech and uncover hidden treasures with this aromatic scent, marking a return to a focus on the identity and authenticity of unique ingredients. Rich and exotic like a fragment of amber resin, the fragrance is not an Oriental, but an Arab and a Lutens.

Unfortunately, all amber fragrances that are similar to Ambre Sultan have limited wearability, and versatility is not a name of the game.

Whenever I think of France, I think of perfume. And while many people might think this is a stereotypical association, as a beauty editor who has spent a lot of time in France with various perfume brands, I can assure you it's one founded in reason— everyone in France seems to smell great. They waft the distinctive aroma of richness wherever they walk. Even if they don't live a life of riches, they smell like they do. Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan is a fragrance journey everyone should experience at least a couple of times. It is not the easiest amber fragrance to wear, but that is not a downside in my opinion.

In 1967, Christian Dior, who was about to launch his make-up line, called on him. He will create for this house colors, style, and images. His vision is finally unified by photography. At the start of the 1970s, the famous editor-in-chief of US Vogue, Diana Vreeland, did not hesitate to proclaim her enthusiasm: “Serge Lutens, Revolution of Make-up!”. The success is resounding. Serge Lutens becomes the symbol of freedom given by make-up for a whole new generation. In 1974, echoing his taste for cinema and the mythical actresses who inhabit it, he directed a short film: “Les Stars”. At that time, he traveled and discovered Morocco and then Japan. These two countries, with such rich and different cultures, will come together in him and will affirm his way of seeing and feeling. My “starter” amber fragrance was the easy-to-wear L’Eau Ambrée by Prada. With mandarin, rose, and jasmine to sweeten the way, I happily wore it until the patchouli drydown started to grate on me. I graduated to the warm and beautiful L’Ambre des Merveilles by Hermès, and its sweet caramel vanilla seems perfect for the cooler months. It reminds me of Prada Candy, but I much prefer its greater complexity. Every September I reach for the stunning starry bottle turned on its side. Ambre sultan Eau de Parfum is not animalic, but he has this fresh, incredibly exciting note, which some here in the forum with the fur of a cat describe.

So far, I find myself in the middle of a luxurious "salon car of fragrances" that richly surrounds me with all the secrets of 1001 nights. A complex composition that doesn't need to hide. I think vanilla at the base is a good choice. I don't take it as such, but the fragrance remains pleasantly soft despite the spice and resin charge and almost a little creamy towards the end. I just hope that the brand will eventually do what Mancera did, and move away from these kinds of atomizers in the near future. My Experience With Perfume The one-to-one replica of these herbs is magnificent and doesn’t come as medicinal at all as it can be in other green perfumes. The warm, and tame base will remind you of many more expensive niche amber fragrances which obviously were “ inspired” by Ambre Sultan, just don’t recreate this kind of powerful experience.
