To activate means to start, to get a reaction going. A compost activator should therefore help get things started. There are several types of activators and we go through each below.

Compost starters/accelerators help remedy this by providing easily digestible nitrogen needed to boost the decay process. Choose a compost bin to suitthe amount of space you have available and the quantity of waste your garden produces. For beginners and those with a small garden,a compact plastic bin is oftena good choice. Larger gardens and allotments may be able to fill a large wooden compost ‘bay’, such as those made from pallets. Keen composters may prefer several in a row, to hold compost at different stages of readiness.Bins of less than 1 cubic m (1.3 cubic yd) are generally less efficient than larger ones, but will still make compost successfully, althoughless rapidly. The best location for a compost bin is a sheltered spot in partialor full shade, to avoid extremes of temperature and moisture. The micro-organisms (bacteria and fungi) that convert the waste into compost work best in constant conditions. So if you have an under-used shady corner in your garden, a compost bin will turn it into a productive hub. Just make sure you can get to the bin easily, otherwise you won’t use it regularly. Regular compost heaps can take up to 12 months to produce any usable compost. Compost Accelerator speeds up the process by naturally increasing the compost heap to give you quality compost in as little as 3 weeks.

When you add these products to your lazy garden compost pile, you provide the right carbon to nitrogen ratio (30:1). Unfortunately the delivery company will be unable to remove items from the pallet or take the pallet away with them and delivery will be made to the kerbside.

We are often asked why is my compost not breaking down? It has been 18 months and I still don't have any compost - how do I get my compost faster? For the corregimiento in Panama, see Garrote, Colón. A 1901 execution at the old Bilibid Prison, Manila, Philippines

You can’t go wrong with any of these options as they are made to nourish your compost while accelerating the composting process. How To Make Your Compost Starter/Accelerator It contains microbial feed which gives microbes a boost of immediately available nutrients. This microbe food speeds up the process of decomposition. Garden compost can take between six months and two years to reach maturity. Larger quantities of material tend to compost more efficiently, but smaller bins, while slower, should still produce good results. Mixing the contents regularly will also help to make the process more efficient. Composting tends to be faster in warm weather and slows down over winter. This process will keep going until the food source to the microorganisms has become depleted. At this point you will have finished compost. If your heap is too wet the chances are it has too much water or nitrogen. Turn the pile regularly to aerate & keep the temperature under control. Add some brown materials like shredded cardboard, newspaper or small twigs to balance it out. Too Dry? If your compost pile contains a high quantity of dry matter (brown material) in your heap, like straws, your garden compost pile will take longer to decompose. Wet, slimy, smelly compost– this may be caused by too little air and too much water.Cover the compost to protect against rain and add more brown waste, such as chopped woody material, woodchip, straw or shredded paper. Avoid adding too many grass clippings in one go – mix them with plenty of brown materialinstead

You will often see urine (pee) listed as a compost activator. We are highly dubious of the real value of adding pee to compost. Urine has a tiny amount of urea, which in turn has tiny amounts of nitrogen. If you are hot composting - the addition of +99% water (which takes heat to remove it as steam) is negative. In a cold composting system, if the heap is very dry urine is OK. If the heap is damp, it compounds aeration issues. Our expertise says those seeing really positive impact probably have compost bins that were too dry and the water is improving the process. An ideal compost pile requires the right carbon to nitrogen ratio. However, in most cases, there is more carbon (brown material) than nitrogen (green material) in your compost pile. Just thought I'd share the interesting results so far. Creating compost was 2ndary to this little experiment. I actually wanted to see if this would turn out to be a functional independent "heat reactor" that could be placed up against a couple of secret feral cat houses by my job to provide a little extra heat and insulation during low winter temps. Any resulting compost would be a gardening bonus for spring 2022. Especially since I will have to cycle these bags and replace them with new ones every few weeks. The upcoming overnight lows will be in the 20'sF for the rest of the week, so we will see. We think this is what we want, a fast break down of the material and you can see it working as the mixture physically falls apart. The structure changes and you will see how recognizable items of food waste turn into a porridge-like mash. Never add cooked food of any kind as this can attract vermin. Shred or cut waste into smaller pieces where possible, especially woody stems.

Popular compost starters/accelerators on the market include The Vitax Compost Maker (powder); J Arthur’s Garotta (powder); seaweed and seaweed extracts (liquids and powder); Bio-tal (liquid); Neudorff (powder); and sachets of enzymes, microbes, or herbs (e.g., QR). If you don’t fancy the idea of using urine to help rot down a heap of lawn clippings or shredded hedge trimmings, then there is an alternative. You can buy sulphate of ammonia. This has all the same properties as urine but it comes as a prilled or pelleted, bagged version. Don’t worry about getting a complete mix the day you build your pile, because hot compost is forked and turned again and again. Go for building a sizeable heap instead, because large heaps heat up better than small ones. A hot composting project that starts out at least 3 feet (1 metre) tall and wide will usually give good results. A metal stake installed in the middle of a new hot composting project can serve as a rustic heat gauge you can feel with your hand, plus you can wiggle it to aerate the pile.
